^ To be honest I think Mariah loved 'BINY' because she loved the beat of the song more than anything, and thought that by releasing a song with a popular beat, she would have a hit on her hands. At that point, remember, she was probably desperate for a hit.

Also, that and I think at that point she genuinely didn't get that people weren't feeling those kind of vocals. I dunno what goes through Mariah's head at times like those She probably found it hard to form an opinion of what was a good release choice and what wasn't because of the yes-men that generally surrounded her prior to 'TEOM' when she started listening again.

Am I the only one that thinks 'B(INY)' is kind of cute? It's certainly one of her least memorable songs, and never should have been a single, but there's something that kinda makes me giggle, and Cam'ron's rap isn't bad. And 'You Got Me' is like a better version of it.

I dont think anyone hates the vocals on Music Box, vinjer, its just some of the material. The vocals are incredible though and make a somewhat boring song listenable.

MB gets tons of hate. It's not my most favourite Mariah album, but it is a Mariah album and it features some of her strongest vocals, which ,if she could pull of today, would be utter bliss. It has its strong and weak sides as everything and it didn't become a monstrous seller for nothing.

Hmmmmmmmm when Music Box was released I can assure that none of you were using the word generic and all these words we like to use since MC changed her style or whatever. Music Box was an album of its time...in 1993....THATS WHAT PEOPLE WANTED TO HEAR!

There are many who believe MC is just jumping on the bandwagon of whats hot right now...so criticizing albums of the past when back then you were lapping it up like damn good icecream makes no sense to me. Its like Mariah changed her style and everyone had an epiphany about her music back then and ooooooo she was being foreced to record it and ooooooooo its not what she wanted to do and all that nonsense. Get over it...Music Box was damn good..all of you were loving Hero, Dreamlover, Anytime You Need A freidn....listening to absolutely powerhouse vocals on All I Ever Wanted and hailing her the queen of the world at the time....so lets spare each other really!

I know MB gets a ton of hate, but I cant imagine anyone in their right mind hating it because of it's vocals. And I do agree with Mike when he says MB's production was popular for its time. Just like in 15 years, people will be looking back on TEOM and likely E=MC2 saying how it's dated, and cheesy in comparison to whatever is "hot" at the moment. ::rolls eyes::

I like "Boy" a lot. I think it was a poor single choice because it followed Cam's song too soon, but the melody and production on "Boy" are really nice.

Part of that is due to age. I was 13-14 when Music Box came out. Those lyrics spoke to me at the time because I thought I would drown for someone or something image Now that I am older I look for something more complex, but I can still relate to the yearning in her vocals and can appreciate the feel the album produces.

Like lyrics about purple or touching her body and rolling her around? Please the lyrics on Music Box were musch better that some of the lyrics we heard on TEOM and definitely on the first single we have here!! So you probably got some more yearning to do!

That's interesting because many have said 'TEOM' is sort of like a 2005 'Music Box'- both big blockbuster albums that are very calculated and designed to ensure success after previous disappointing/flop releases. Both are also very dated and lyrically don't say much. I actually think 'E=MC2' could be like 'Daydream'- more of the same of the previous album, with perhaps a little more artistic variety.

I don't think you could say TEOM is "dated" at all. Aside from some of the upbeat stuff (e.g. TTF) that could sound that, the songs were actually created with a retro-classic-yet-new feel that makes them sound timeless, really. Anyway, the issue with MB is really not that it's dated (really, you could only say that about the 2 C&C contributions) as that type of ballad (i.e. Hero), even if it's not what radio is into right now, tends to far outlive some of the songs most consider less "cheesy/schmaltzy".

That's a really good way of putting it... I feel the same way, and hope we're right!

"Music Box" is a masterpiece and will remain forever in music history as one of the most successful albums of all time.

"Music Box" is what made Mariah an international superstar. Before "MB" she was hardly known in Europe. "Without You" was her most successful single ever here.

"Music Box" is the album that most likely gained more fans than any other album.

Off of "Music Box" came some of Mariah's most popular and signiture songs - "Dreamlover", "Hero", "Without You", "AYNAF".

Vocally "MB" is pure heaven.

Material-wise "MB" is pop music at its best for its time.

Of course, in 2008 this type of music sounds dated and may annoy some people, but this is absolutely normal, just like Elvis Presly's music sounds dated, just like in 15 years Justin Timberlake and Timbaland will sound dated.

I think people dislike it because Mariah dislikes it so much. I guess it can kind of put a damper on it for some people (fans) because she's confirmed that it really wasn't "her". If anything, to me it's a testiment to just what a fantastic artist Mariah is. Even when she was a position where she wasn't able to really make music that she really liked, she still managed to great an album that touched so many people with easy-to-relate lyrics, beautiful melodies and, given the context, a surprisingly emotional vocal performance.

Perfect post!! Especially those last two lines. A lot of people don't seem to get that.

I can't argue with the facts, as MB *is* Mariah's best-selling album ever and the one that jumpstarted her career in Europe BUT, I'd hardly call it "pop music at its best", even for its time; save for the singles, it is full of fillers and ballads too corny, even for Mariah.

Actually Danny, I think most people agree with that. YOU'RE the one who said you wanted her to do one of those songs NOW, which makes no sense because it is "dated"

If she could modify the production a bit, like she did with There For Me or Lead the Way, it wouldn't sound dated at all. Really its her soaring vocals on those ballads that make them so special, if she could still do that with a more modern sounding ballad (thats still slower than midtempos like WBT) it really would be great 4 today. I mean theres nothing dated about singing with a piano. Anyway, I think Bye Bye is gonna be that song for me.

I've heard that is in fact similar to OSD, however, they did not specify musically, or lyrically.
