whatever... I dont think shes TRYING to sound hoarse or trying to convey an emotion that isn't really there. The song gets me right to the core. Its soul stirring... Alicia isn't fake.

and shes a great writer melodically... Lyrically yeah shes pretty routine and nothing new... but her melodic compositions are really amazing.

its careless to call her a fraud especially when she's been so consistent an artist and personality.

Its not surprising that Mariah Carey fans are threatened by Alicia... a lot of them profess to want Mariah to be a certain type of artist and their descriptions always sound familiar to what Alicia already is...

i love mariah... i love alicia..

now its beyonce whos the fraud.

To you she may be consistent, but to me she isn't. For every song I like - like "Diary" - she has 2 or 3 songs that underwhelm me.

Who was threatened by Alicia? Judging by the reactions here, I don't think anyone wants Mariah to become anything at all like Alicia

What does Beyonce have to do with this? Beyonce being a fraud, doesn't take away from Alicia being a fraud.

Well, I don't see Alicia as a "fraud" as much as I just don't think she's all that great. I'm not sure she presents herself as something she isn't, but she isn't as great as people say. I think all of the praise people heap on her doesn't help, but it's not like I would like her music if everyone hated her. I've heard both of her albums and the new single, and there are only 3 songs be her I like:
"If I Ain't Got You"
"Diary"
"No One"

The Prince cover was Ok, too.

I love"You Don't Know My Name" except for all the damn talking, and since there's so much of it, it ruins the song for me.

Beyonce's music is far better/more consistent than Alicia. And at least Beyonce only gets over-praised for average song-writing, unlike Alicia, who gets over-praised for average everything. And like Doc said, what does Beyonce even have to do with anything?

I think Alicia is great. She has a beautiful voice and writes great lyrics / melody. However, I agree that Alicia is very overrated (like Lauryn Hill in the 1990s). imo Alicia is very clever in what she does.

Can someone tell me a song of hers that has great lyrics? In thinking about her biggest songs - "Fallin'," "If I Ain't Got You," "Diary," "You Don't Know My Name," and now "No One" - none have original or insightful lyrics.

ugh this thread is sooo disgusting... can't we close it?.. i want to just throw up reading all this... whats the point of continuing to rehash redundant opinions about alicia... i swear jason, you've been repeating your little ideas for years.... its ur opinion that her songs aren't insightful... why can't you EVER just put two words at the begining of your sentences that say "I THINK"

u are so condescending critisizing Alicia's lyric writing ability on a MARIAH CAREY board. Mariah may have really great talent for phrasing, time, rythym... but her lyrics aren't any more insightful than anything Alicia's written. They write about the same things...

Alicia has TREMENDOUS insight into what its like to be in love and in a relationship.... everything about her music is from the gut and honest... so just stop the blatant and negligent hating.

ooh yeah, let me take my own advice

I THINK Alicia has TREMENDOUS insight into what its like to be in love and in a relationship.... I THINK everything about her music is from the gut and honest... so just stop the blatant and negligent hating. please? i mean seriously, just take a look around...

I brought up Beyonce cuz god forbid someone calls out that fake one... but alicia is a "snooze fest" here and unoriginal. I seriously think Mariah fans have a complex cuz Alicia is more critically well received than Mariah is --- I don't like that Mariah gets dissed by the critics, but i'm not going to say Alicia doesn't deserve it... she does.

I haven't read through this whole thread but what irritates me about Alicia is the fact that she's more critically acclaimed than Mariah, yet, to me, her lyrics aren't that creative and insightful. I don't get what all the fuss is all about on her. Maybe it's b/c she does play the piano? I have no idea.

You hit the nail on the head, Colson. Because Alicia plays a piano, she is seen as more "talented".

I don't know about lyrically, but melodically, Alicia is a total joke compared to Mariah's abilities.

I agree. The thing that annoys me most about Alicia (well not really her, because it's technically not in her control) is how it seems like she's guaranteed to get praise (like veterans e.g. U2, Madonna or even Beyonce), when she hasn't even been around that long/proven to be consistent.

It should be understood that what people write on a messageboard is their opinion.

Have I ever said Mariah is a great writer of lyrics? No. Mariah is rarely praised as a writer, though, so there is no point in discussing that. Alicia is praised as a writer, though, and has won 3 Grammys for it. I think that's lame since her lyrics are usually full of cliches. You still haven't given me an example of one of her insightful, great songs.

the example is: ALL her songs... just because you're not moved doesn't mean they aren't moving... Shes one of the few people out there writing about love in a really classic, emanignful way. If I Aint Got You, A Woman's Worth.... Sometimes the most meaningful things are .....wait... ya know what forget it, you never change your opinion ever so why am I bothering?

"No One" moves to #10 on R&B/Hip-Hop Songs in its 3rd week on the chart.

Is there a radio edit or something of "You Don't Know My Name" that cuts out at least a little of the talking? I love the song in general, but the talking annoys me. I'd love to find a version where the talking is at least edited some.

Well, with "Karma" she taught the world that 'what goes around comes around, what goes up must come down'. Quite insightful.

I don't personally find Alicia insightful, but I like some of her music regardless. I also don't particularly find much insightful about U2 or Madonna's music.

Maybe not all of the time, but I would say songs like "If God Will Send His Angels" and "One" (U2) and "Live To Tell" and "Drowned World" (Madonna) offer more than Alicia has to this point.
