I met someone today who never heard of Mariah. He was a preacher and came over to our house. So we got on the subject on MC (he visited my web site) and I shared with him some tunes of MC that were focused on God. I mentioned Make It Happen, MSG, and FLAB. He wrote them down. My dad said Hero, but I dont think thats not really centered on God in what a preacher would like. My mom said WYB.

Anyway, have any of you met someone who never heard of MC?

I did yeah lmfao And I'm always amazed when it happens...
Where have they all been living? I mean seriously even if you don't like her, you've already heard something BY Mariah Carey! After all she's been in the business for 17 years, hello??? lmfao
Sometimes people know her songs without even knowing who she is... This happens as well lol

Well, I've probably met someone who hasn't heard of her, but I've never had that discussion. Anytime she has come up in conversation or whatever, I've never been around someone who asked who she was.

My own father didn't know who she was until I liked her. He never listens to pop radio/pays attention to the entertainment world, so it's not that weird. Unless a female entertainer has me for a fan or does something that causes massive news, he does not know who she is LOL.

I don't recall talking to someone who didn't know who Mariah Carey was. Maybe they knew about her but just couldn't tell what songs she sang but never did someone not hear about her at all.

I'm happy Mariah is not recognized with a certain song a la Celine's "My Heart Will Go On". There were times when I had to remind people (elderly lol) who she was and when I would say "the one who sang the Titanic song..." they would instantly say "Oh, OK, I remember that song".

a friend of mine loves My all, and when I asked him if he knows who's the singer, he said "Mariya Cry". I LMAO and then preached for an hour about all things Mariah surprisingly he became a fan!

I think the fact that there was never really a Mariah "craze" like there was for other superstars like Elvis and Michael Jackson and Madonna or even Britney Spears that leads to MC being a little less known than the aforementioned. Mariah is super-famous, no doubt, but you actually kind of had to be paying some sort of attention to American pop music to notice her. It's like how I've mentioned before in other threads how Usher can sell twice as much as Beyonce but she's still twice as famous image . (Oddly, the closest we've come to a real pop-culture Mariah "craze" may well have been TEOM... or, in a negative way, Glitter image).

People that aren't aware of her don't bother me (I haven't met many), what bother me are people who haven't realized (or atleast seem to not realize) that Mariah made a huge comeback. It's a serious testament to how much farther bad news travels than good news when there are still those few people out there that (apparently) believe Mariah's career ended with Glitter.

My 92 year old grand father who lives in an isolated village in Greece has no idea of Mariah, Whitney, Prince, Janet, Celine, Britney etc.
He only recognises that weird man who was black and became white somehow, and some woman named Madonna who appears on television wearing her underwear singing or maybe even masturbating at the same time!
I'm being serious.

You're absolutely right, I was going to add Micheal Jackson to Madonna aswell. If they dont know Mariah, then they most likely dont know Celine and others alike either.

Well, MJ and Madonna are cultural icons whose influence goes beyond that of Mariah, Celine, et al. And they've been around for a long time.

I think that those who have never heard of her are very few. On the other hand...

My brother knows her well enough and he entered my room one day while emotions was playing. He got goosebumps when he heard her whistle at the bridge. My girlfriend heard lead the way once and her jaw dropped during the bridge.

I think what people are not aware of the most is the extent of her vocal capabilities. I mean her most succesful songs are probably (at least in Europe) without you, hero, vision of love, my all, fantasy, heartbreaker. I think there are people who don't realize that Mariah can sing in whistle register, sing very low notes like in Melt away or do runs like the ones she does in Lead the Way. I think her vocals are what people don't know of the most.

My point was that older people worldwide, who couldn't care less about the pop music scene, don't recognize them as cultural icons or artists. They know them as celebrities, because of the novelty that once surrounded them and the inescapable fuss the media made about their lifestyle not for their music career.
Personnally I can't deny they're both great (especially Madonna for me) image
