I've always been surprised at how many Mariah fans are fans of Jewel's. They're such different artists, writers, and singers but Jewel's releasing her new album, as yet untitled, and a memoir "Never Broken" on September 14th.

The best part is that Jewel describes the album as a bookend to her debut album Pieces of You; "It's acoustic driven - folk - a bookend to my first CD Pieces of You. Not very commercial, but honest." Jewel has around 500 songs and less than 100 have been recorded so this album consists of 8 songs that were written years ago - some as many as 20 years ago - and 6 brand new compositions. The "old" songs have been performed countless times over the years so you can probably find them on YouTube.

She's following the same approach as POY which had studio recordings but also live recordings of some songs. Jewel performs best when she's infant of an audience so she held a free concert in Texas around 18 months ago and recorded it and performed some brand new songs and others that were in in line to be on the album. The track listing is Jewel's next lyrical masterpiece is:

1. Love Used To Be (new)

2. A Boy Needs A Bike ("old")

3. Everything Breaks ("old")

4. Family Tree (new)

5. It Doesn't Hurt Right Now (new)

6. His Pleasure Is My Pain ("old")

7. Here When Gone ("old")

8. The Shape Of You ("old")

9. Plain Jane (new)

10. Pretty Face Foo (new)l

11. Nicotine Love ("old")

12. Carnivore ("old")

13. My Fathers Daughter ("old")

 14. Mercy (formerly called Broken Until Open for any of you prone to tracking this type of thing) (new)

This is album is what her fans have been asking for for years. Written (the new songs) and recorded whilst going through a divorce the album looks to be a return to form for Jewel. Details of the new book and album were posted in a blog entry on her website.

An excerpt from the blog:

My focus for this CD was to forget everything I have learned about the music business the last 20 years and get back to what my bones have to say about songs and words and feeling and meaning. I let go of genre, radio, trend, current events, and clever strategies. I let go of it all - which was no small feet as those voices are so deeply penetrating after 20 years of doing this professionally. It took real effort to clear my thoughts and have no rules and just create - going back to my folk/American roots that I began with.

I'm so excited for this album! I've been waiting for years for songs like Everything Breaks, Carnivore, A Boy Needs a Bike, Nicotine Love to be recorded. I've loved Jewel's writing for years, her lyricism really is untouchable. As much as I love Mariah's writing I have to say I think Jewel is the best female songwriter of the last 20 years. The live versions are always incredible and I'm looking forward to seeing how Jewel records them.

September can't come soon enough!

Jewel's revealed the name of her new album "Picking Up The Pieces". She announced it on a blog on her website. I'm loving the cover!

Jewel collaborated with Dolly Parton a song called My Father's Daughter. I prefer it solo tbh. Dolly's voice is a little to rough for it but i'm sure I'll get used to it.

Oh, Shape of You was AMAZING at the Emmys (?) back then.

The Shape of You is an incredible song.  I love the studio version that she released after the Emmys.

The Shape of You is on the new album, I'm hoping its rerecorded. Jewel's pretty good like that, she's recut songs from past albums for upcoming albums.

My top 10 favourite Jewel song are in no particular order:

Foolish Games
Who Will Save Your Soul
Hands
A Life Uncommon
Goodbye Alice In Wonderland
Last Dance Rodeo
1000 Miles Away
Where You Are
The Cowboy's Lament
Stand

My favourite non-recorded songs are:

A Boy a Needs A Bike
Everything Breaks
Violet Eyes
Carnivore
Grey Matter
You Lied

The clips of Love Used To Be and Pretty Faced Fool are making me think they'll be in my top 10 favourite songs.

I was watching a Howard Stern interview with Jewel and she said that Tommy Mottolla and Sony where one of the labels trying to sign her back in the mid nineties but she didn't sign with him because she felt he was sleazy and slick. I'd never heard that before and I've always wondered if Mariah and Jewel have ever met.

Finally listened to My Father's Daughter. Such a beautiful and powerful song. Dolly complimented her so well. Jewel is still one of the best songwriters out there.

She really is! Her country stuff was a little wishy washy in my opinion but from what I've heard of the new songs from the album Jewel's got her mojo back.

Another song has been released from the album called 'Pretty Faced Fool' but she didn't write it which I'm a little disappointed by but it's still a great song.

Can't believe the album is out next Friday!!

I watched her interview with Tavis Smiley last night, and it was terrific. Fascinating, actually. She spoke about her relationships with her mom and her dad, why she moved out at 15, and so on. Her emotional intelligence is clearly quite high.

I've heard a few songs. Kinda bored me. Maybe wasn't in the right mood? I love this interview answer I read from her, though:

I underlined that line in the book, about how most singer-songwriters write their best work in their 20s versus novelists in their 50s. When you say that’s about lifestyle, do you mean that’s when musicians are struggling the most?
I think novelists have a more reclusive lifestyle. Fame doesn’t affect them the same way. Celebrity doesn’t affect them the same way as it does a rock star. Whenever you stop thinking you have something to learn, when you get people around you to say you’re awesome, you’re great, you know everything. When you start believing that, you get a little out of touch with reality, because you’re living a really unreal life. You’re out of touch with people because you’re only seeing them from a stage. You’re living in private planes, you have groupies, you have managers. What are you going to be writing about? And if you’re not continuing your education, continuing to read voraciously, have a huge appetite . . . it’s like a river: You have to have headwaters that feed it or else it dries up. I think novelists typically have a lifestyle that lends itself to continued learning, to continued focus on the craft, and to the quiet that’s necessary to grow and develop. And musicians don’t often have that. It’s too busy. There’s not enough time between records. And God forbid you start believing your own press. It’s a death knell to creativity.
