But India's point is clearly about the Grammys NOT being a popularity contest. What you're saying is that Justin's win is justifiable because he was the most popular nominee. So the Grammys are about popularity? Well they have been for some time, but that was not the point of the award in the first place.

About R&B not being popular, this shouldn't matter to them. Why not rotate the categories they display? If they didn't show the Pop Vocal category one year, nobody would die. If the Grammys wanted to be fair to everyone they'd find a way to be inclusive, regardless of the popularity of the genre.
Why should the Pop artists benefit from that exposure more than the R&B acts who are relegated to the pre-show? What makes them more special?

They bring in more ratings. Mariah always said the grammys are very political so I don't take it as seriously anymore, especially since her snubs in 2006.

I mean this more for the US posters, but how many people here knew Daft Punk before Kanye sample them? I'm on another board where people are claiming they were huge when Kanye sample them. They didn't have have a gold album in the 00s, though. I'm curious if people here knew them 10 years ago.

My point about popularity is just that it's natural; the more popular musicians are going to be more known in her general and are thus more likely to get votes. I am it saying voters vote directly based on popularity, I'm saying more voters know JT than know PJ Morton or even Tamar.
And the Grammys want good ratings so of course for the televised portion they will take popularity into account. What makes Pop more "special" is that the nominees for, say, Pop Solo are more interesting/known to the casual viewer than those in R&B Solo. And again, why aren't you and India.Arie mentioning the black Darius Rucker winning Country Solo? Should white people be upset a black man won that? And why only focus on black artists? Why not mention that Latin didn't get any performers or awards on air. Neither did jazz. You're being just as exclusive.

Around The World and Da Funk are 2 of my favorite songs and videos and both were from when I was only in the 7th grade, I'm embarrassed to say I never bought that album though, I was also obsessed with One More Time and used to constantly pick it up in the store, but never bought that either. smiley: embarassed Their latest is terrible, I only like Get Lucky, but I would prefer it with another singer.

Is Darius Rucker a Country singer? If so, then good for him.

I am more upset about the fact that two Pop artists got R&B awards this year, race is secondary in my point.

I'm clearly talking about JT and Rihanna, though a case could be made for them too.

^ Wasn't Rihanna's album seen as R&B? I remember when it dropped people were saying she wouldn't have as many hits because so many of the songs were urban.

Justin may be pop overall, but I think "Pusher Love Girl" is an urban song with that heavy neo-soul influence. It also has a lot of funk in it. He didn't win R&B Artist, he won for a specific song.

What case could be made for M&L being pop?

Suure! 'Stay', 'Diamonds', 'Right Now' and 'What Now' are so R&B, basically only Urban AC radio can play those songs

Unapologetic was not miscategorized. Here is the description for Best Contemporary Urban Album, the award she won:

Best Urban Contemporary Album is for albums containing at least 51 percent playing time of newly recorded contemporary vocal tracks derivative of R&B. This category is intended for artists whose music includes the more contemporary elements of R&B and may incorporate production elements found in urban pop, urban Euro-pop, urban rock, and urban alternative.

Songs like Phresh Out the Runway, Numb, Pour It Up, Loveeeeeee Song, Jump, Nobody's Business, I mean get real.

Also, I live in Los Angeles and Diamonds and Stay both received significant airplay on Power 106. If you don't know the station, look it up (hint: it's not Urban AC). smiley: wink

The real reason Mario is still talking about this is because he's burnt his precious Tamar lost the award. He can pump up the FOMM Tamar thread all he wants but it was obvious Rihanna had this award in the bag.

I have my own opinions, I don't have to latch onto the Grammy's opinion to form my own mind.

The Rihaha stans are all the same, latching onto the latest silly thing to boast yoour deluded egos. A pitiful mess.
