^ As much as Mariah resents those looks now, her looks in that era were perfect for the music and for her image. I'm not usually a fan of concert videos, but there was really no other option for "Hero." Videos are hard to do for that kind of song, and her performance and the dress and the lighting and everything were just perfect for the song.

It kinda sucked that we then got another performance video right after it, but for that "Without You" performance is the best of that song and tops the album version so it made sense, too.

Mariah's run from 1993-1996 is seriously incredible. Really, you could say 1992-1996 because of "I'll Be There." Look at the hit singles released in that time span:
"I'll Be There"
"Dreamlover"
"Hero"
"Without You"
"All I Want For Christmas Is You"
"Fantasy"
"One Sweet Day"
"Always Be My Baby"

That's an amazing run of perfectly crafted singles that all became hits and, for the most part, are still well-known. And then between Music Box, Merry Christmas, and Daydream, she sold about 60 million copies worldwide. It's astounding.

lmaaao haha werk

i love mariah's walk. she walked just like that a few times before starting back in 90 when she was first on Arensio's show. Also for some award shows from the early 90s. It's a really nice sexy strut

Well this thread has rejuvenated my Mariah obsession. My ears are orgasming with these vocals. They're pre'ing all through All I've Ever Wanted leading up to that bridge.

"Endless Love" peaked at #2 but that was mostly due to initial hype; it didn't have much longevity. I love that covet, though. They are such better/smoother singers than Lionel and especially Diana.

I never got how some could say Lionel and Diana's version was better, neither of them can sing. I think those who say that are just nostalgic. Clearly Luther and Mariah took an almost unlistenable song and made it good with their great voices.

Mariah was overdoing it with her vocal gymnastics. It's rare I say that she oversings, but she did on this song. Holding those notes on the word 'care' were just unnecessary. Nostalgic or not, the original version sounded more natural without trying too hard.

I can't tell you how many people were asking me(because I was a fan), why was Mariah shouting on those parts. I couldn't even answer the question because I agreed with them. laugh.gif

Diana couldn't hit or hold those notes even if she had nuts to grab. I disagree with the word 'oversing'. Oversing gets thrown around all the time by people who can't sing.

^ Agreed. I don't think Mariah over sings on Endless Love. If anything I get the feeling the songs tempo is slower than what Mariah wants to sing. Otherwise, it's my favourite rendition.

Yeah, it's a lovely little song actually. I have a memory of hearing it for the first time on a REALLY bad day back in 1994 and it really cheered me up and put me in a much better mood, so I've always had a special kind of affinity for it.

Well I'll just agree to disagree with all of you. I still don't think they should have touched that song and their version is very forgettable compared to the original one.

I don't think I've ever listened to the original in full. I know Diana Ross is some kind of legend and her voice is, apparently, decent but I've never been able to consider her a "great voice" after watching the Diva's Live 2000 performance... I realise she was 60 or so and had probably been splashing in a bath full of champagne before coming out on stage. I've heard some of her other songs like Upside Down, and I'm Coming Out etc and she sounds alright but I'd rather listen to Aretha sing anything NOW than listen to Diana Ross try to sing a ballad.

Fair enough. ^3^xxx I never paid attention to the original recipe until I heard M&L's version so their version is actually my original recipe.

Love both their voices, sublime! Luther's best duet, their voices matched like bread and butter!

I love me some Diana Ross, don't get me wrong. 'If We Hold Together' always makes me cry!!!!!!!!!!!! smiley: frownsmiley: frownsmiley: frownsmiley: frown

Diana on EL is actually good, I prefer Luther over to Lionel and I do like Mariah's delivery on it.

Yeah, just on vocalists alone it's hard to beat. Luther is thought of to be one of the great male vocalists of all-time and obviously Mariah is just as well regarded as a female vocalist. That's quite the tandem.

This! When I listened to the original after hearing M&L's I was like "WTF is this crap?". I was so disappointed, I was expecting Diana Ross to be almost better than Mariah.

No, Diana Ross could never sing. She sounds like a white girl. She lucked out that she got some great singles written for her, but she was more of a J.Lo type artist, her success didn't really have anything to do with her.

Diana's vocals on "Missing You," "Home" and "One More Chance" sh#t! J.Ho could never.
Re: "Endless Love" - I agree that Mariah & Luther's version is far superior to the original. I think they pretty much own the song too, their version was more successful and enduring than Diana & Lionel's.
