What kept 'Without You' from #1 at Pop radio? And what were the top 2 songs on the Hot 100 when it was #3?

^It probably was Ace of Base's "The Sign". That was #1 on pop radio for 14 weeks. It most likely blocked off WY.

Celine Dion's "Power of Love" held the #2 spot the first week WY was at #3. R. Kelly's "Bump 'n Grind" and Ace of Base's "The Sign" held those top 2 positions the other 5 weeks.

Yeah, I remember "The Sign", "Don't Turn Around" and "Anytime You Need A Friend" being high up on the same VH1 video countdown around that time, so Ace of Base was pretty hot for sure.

Don't forget about "All That She Wants". It would have went to #1 if it wasn't for Meat Loaf's "I'd Do Anything For Love" and Janet's "Again". Both songs blocked it off.

Yeah, that song was huge here too. Looking back, Ace of Base was such a surprise phenomenon given the other stuff that was on the radio at the time. Pop radio was so diverse back then, even with the glut of ballads.

"Endless Love" peaked at #2 but that was mostly due to initial hype; it didn't have much longevity. I love that covet, though. They are such better/smoother singers than Lionel and especially Diana.

I never got how some could say Lionel and Diana's version was better, neither of them can sing. I think those who say that are just nostalgic. Clearly Luther and Mariah took an almost unlistenable song and made it good with their great voices.

Mariah was overdoing it with her vocal gymnastics. It's rare I say that she oversings, but she did on this song. Holding those notes on the word 'care' were just unnecessary. Nostalgic or not, the original version sounded more natural without trying too hard.

I can't tell you how many people were asking me(because I was a fan), why was Mariah shouting on those parts. I couldn't even answer the question because I agreed with them. laugh.gif

Nonsense.

This lol.  I remember it coming on the radio once and my parents making the same claim.  They played it for me and much like when my dad played Harry Nilson's version of WY, I had no idea how they could hold the opinion that they did lol.  Clean out your ears!

I really like Harry's version though....  It's just a different take...

^^ Yeah, I can understand why people of that generation are touched by it, especially given the vocal style of male singers in rock music when it came out. Obviously she loved it too, since the arrangement is based on his version and not the original. It's a heartfelt vocal -- but not a pleasant one to my ears lol

I'm not of that generation xDD Still (althoug I suppose that this song came later xD), I SOOOOOOO much prefer Luther&Mariah's version of Endless Love........ It's a shame that the two or so times that I got to hear it on the radio, it's Lionel&Diana's version that it's played ;(

^I don't remember the specific deets, but I remember the song had the reputation of being 'cursed' until Mariah did it. I guess Badfinger had drama too.

It's cool how much press the anniversary is getting.
I think it's because this was an iconic era for her. The Proctor's Theater special is one of her most recognizable moments to the general public with the curls and black gown belting out 'Hero' being one of her iconic looks.

Not to mention the 'Dreamlover' video with the jeans shorts and flannel shirt. It's very nostalgic and it felt like her first true superstar moment in many ways thanks also to 'Without You' breaking her through a lot of international markets.
The 1/2 combo of Dreamlover and Hero was genius.  Absolutely perfect.  Like you said, it was her first superstar moment.  Sure, she had great success with her debut, but so did Paula Abdul.  The only thing missing from this era was a proper tour, and I put the blame solely on Mariah for that, since we didn't get one until 2003.

Yes, or right in that vicinity.  I remember because I was with my dad in the car coming back from something and Mariah's version came on the radio and he like sat there in total silence and listened to the whole thing -- which he never did, because he didn't like her much at all (aside randomly from the Dreamlover Def Club Mix which he thinks is awesome lol).  He was a big Harry Nilsson fan.

I remember I played the live version for him off the VHS tape right after that and he was like "I don't like it, she oversings too much" lol.

What's the story on the (relatively) low chart position of AYNAF anyways? Did people just not connect with it as much or did Sony pull the single or something?
At the time it was her lowest peaking single at Pop radio (#5) following 10 consecutive #1s and a #2 single ('Without You') so I guess it was a matter of burn-out. Plus the album had already sold a lot, so single sales were obviously going to be lower.

I imagine that's why AYNAF was also her first release to have both a R&B and Dance mix, as an incentive for people to buy the CD single.
Yeah makes sense to me.  She had kind of been ruling the world at that point and people were bound to get sick of it.

I still remember buying that AYNAF single (with my lawn mowing money lol) and having my mind completely blown the first time I heard it.  Listening to that, the Fantasy single, and Slipping Away from the ABMB single for the first time were all landmark moments for me that I still remember vividly.
In general it's very rare for an artist to keep up momentum; I mean, even with as many hits as Rihannas has had, she's had breaks in momentum and needed re-releases and the like to keep up her popularity.

Mariah had 5 #1s out of the gate, and she's still the only one to do that. It was inevitable that some singles after that wouldn't do as well. Look at acts like Alanis, Jewel, Hootie & The Blowfish, Sheryl Crow, etc. who had huge "debut" albums and then barely had hits with their next releases. Mariah saved herself in a way with "I'll Be There," which is crazy because it was sort of a happy accident in that she almost didn't even perform it. But she had lost a lot of momentum by the time "Make It Happen" was out. I do think its run was partly affected by the sudden success of "IBT," but still; "IBT" was huge. 8 weeks at #1 in airplay?!?! And with the live EP selling nearly 3 million copies off that one song?!?! It would have been #1 on the Hot 100 for more than 2 weeks if it wasn't a limited single.

So anyway, Music Box under-performed a bit at first considering how big "Dreamlover" was when released. That single broke airplay records at the time and sold 1 million copies here. It was definitely "Hero" and the NBC special that propelled that album to incredible heights; it didn't even reach #1 for the first time until the holidays. I think people had to sort of discover her again, in a sense.

AYNAF is an amazing song and I'm glad it was a single regardless, but strictly commercially speaking AIEW would've made more sense. That could've been a big hit even as a 4th single imo.

I feel like it's the same thing that happened with Emotions (not releasing And You Don't Remember as a second single - and keep releasing Can't Let Go, but later) ...

Another thing: ¿Did Make It Happen chart better than AYNAF? I mean....  Instead of bombarding us with only MIH she could have given more credit to AYNAF...

It would be nice to hear "AYNAF" now and again, but I think she performs "MIH" so much because 1) It's a true uptempo and just comes across great live 2) It has a good uplifting message 3) It's a vocal she can do well in basically any vocal state. "AYNAF" would be cool for her to do in dedication to her fans at some point, but it is more difficult vocally and is another ballad in a career full of hit ballads.

"The Sign" blocked it from #1 at Pop, and that and "Bump N Grind" kept it from #1 on the Hot 100. It was basically just stuck behind two huge hits. "Without You" was still big in the U.S. Didn't it finish at #16 on the year-end Hot 100? That's pretty good. I think it just gets overlooked a bit because it was so much bigger in Europe. It was also her first song that didn't have any crossover appeal to R&B at all (why it was paired with "NFY," obviously) so that limited its overall popularity in relation to some other singles.
