There are some amazing tracks:

Dreamlover
Anytime You Need a Friend (best song on the album)
Music Box
All I've Ever Wanted (bad lyrics, but the incredible vocals and melody make up for it)
Everything Fades Away
Without You

Then there's Hero that's a classic but not a favorite of mine, and then there's stuff that's just kind of bland; Now That I Know, Never Forget You, I've Been Thinking About You, Just to Hold You Once Again (she did this theme waaay better on My All).

^^ Totally agree, that's the big problem with the album overall -- just that sense of blandness to it.

I think what the MB era should be best remembered for from an artistic standpoint was that it's really where she started to break out and experiment more with her work and creativity. Both sets of the AYNAF mixes were incredible, in terms of the production and the unique vocal styles for her at that point. The Dreamlover remix setup the whole David Morales relationship and pushed the expectations way up of what an artist is supposed to bring to a remix. You got the first inklings of a more urban sound with the Never Forget You single mixes and the first hints at a more sexual side with Do You Think Of Me. There was a LOT going on behind the scenes at that time, even if the stuff pushed to the forefront was fairly vanilla and bland.

Yeah I would say MB is easily the worst of the 'Tommy era' albums (Mariah Carey, Emotions, MB, Daydream). Although Daydream is slightly overrated because it does have its fair share of schlock ballads that are no better than the blander MB ballads (Open Arms, WISY, Forever). Those ballads really bring DD down imo. If she hadn't felt forced to keep churning out that kind of ballad at the time, DD would've been a true masterpiece like Butterfly (as evidenced by a brilliant track like Slipping Away being pushed to the side). I feel like DD has an urban cool to it that wasn't fully realized.

In terms of her whole career I would rank MB towards the bottom along with Rainbow and E=MC2.

Yeah. Maybe it's just me but, I think of all of Mariah's albums, Music box seems to be the one less talked about in terms of how it all came about, the writing process, the aim of it all.

It would also be cool to know the sequence in which the songs came about. I think I read she began writing the album in August 1992 but as for when each song came about, who knows. Maybe Hero was first?

Yeah, I think a fair assessment of the DD ballads (although I personally love Forever) and she was definitely caught in between worlds at that point.

What elevates Daydream up for me above some of the pedestrian material on the album and definitely above MB is the sincerity of her delivery and the overall style of the material. Most of her other material is fairly direct, emotionally speaking -- where Daydream is just sort of vaguely somber and melancholy, which gives it a really "haunting" quality to me. It's so unlike most of her other work (except stuff like Candy Bling which is very reminiscent of the DD tone), which I love and appreciate.  Slipping Away would have fit in perfectly with the rest of the tone too -- drop WISY.

And let's just bury E=MC^2 down under about a thousand layers deeper than the rest of her work lol.

Are you saying that you think that would help it's reputation among hardcore fans?

Hero was probably early in the game, because that movie 'Hero' came out in October 1992.

I think the overall banality of MB comes down to the fact that she was too happy and carefree. Sadistic, I know!

Daydream was elevated because there were some major struggles going on personally and professionally (just like Butterfly). It's like, if someone's on holiday, they take the typical holiday photos but if there is a sense of doom and darkness, they're scribbling secret messages on the walls and that's way more intriguing .

Yeah, that definitely helps with any music I think, although Fantasy is one of the best purely joyful tracks of all time in terms of sound at least, although even in the case of that song the lyrics are steeped in loneliness.

I don't think there is anything 20 years down the track that would help its reputation among hardcore fans. It's been lived with way too long to change opinions now.

Music Box, even despite its iconic singles, is the least "Mariah" album. It is so AC & Pop and there is not a big sense of Mariah's true self coming through. To me, ATYNAF feels like the most disjointed cut on the album. It's an incredible track but too different from the rest to fit in almost. It's much more Emotions than Music Box.

I love Never Forget You!!! I just wish they made it much more R&B like the mix going around of it. Mariah's vocals are longing for a hard r&b track...the soul is ridiculous. I also wish Dreamlover had the hard beat that it deserves. I love her voice on that song so much it's so silky smooth. Music Box is very poppy which makes it rank low on my list of MC albums, but ATYNAF, W/O U- completely and totally legendary. Everything Fades Away is a classic song that needed to be put on every copy of Music Box. I also love Do You Think of Me

I asked what chart, not which country.  And if they are doing by in general, no matter where, then the superior ANYNAF should have been included, since it hit #1 on Billboards US Dance chart (according to wiki).

I love the song but I wasn't until a few years ago that I realized how cliche and cheesy the lyrics are.
As opposed to...the entire album? lol I don't know how Mariah "progressed" from Emotions to Music Box.

The singles are legendary but the rest of the songs are kind of bland comparatively. Apart from NFY, there were no single contenders beyond what was.

I disagree. "NTIK" and "AIEW" would have fit in back in 1993, too. "NFY," too, had it been a full single and not just R&B. remember that in 1993/1994 songs like Celine's "The Power Of Love," Robin S "Show Me Love," and Toni's "Breathe Again" were hits.

I remember that Mariah biography where they author suggested that AIEW was basically designed after "I Will Always Love You". It would have been interesting to see how it would have fared as a commercial release.
