Jimmy Iovine Out of 'American Idol', Randy Jackson Poised to Replace Him As Mentor

EXCLUSIVE: The sweeping changes on Fox’s American Idol continue. I’ve learned that top music producer Jimmy Iovine is leaving the talent competition series, where he served as an in-house mentor for the past three seasons. I hear he will likely be replaced by former Idol judge Randy Jackson. Iovine, co-founder of Interscope Records and chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M, joined Idol in Season 10, the first without original judge Simon Cowell. With his music executive/producer experience and no-nonsense attitude, Iovine was tapped to fill the void left by the acerbic British music executive. His Interscope Geffen A&M also took over from Cowell’s label in handling the albums of the Idol finalists. While Idol has ended its relationship with Iovine, the show may not be left without a top music producer evaluating the contestants as Dr. Luke has been in talks for the last vacant seat on the judging panel, joining Keith Urban and Jennifer Lopez.

As for original Idol judge Jackson, who in May announced he was not returning to the judging table, Fox chairman Kevin Reilly earlier this month indicated that Jackson “will be back in some capacity, adding, “He is a friend of show, and certainly guests spots (are a real possibility).” A mentor position would make Jackson’s presence on Idol more regular, allowing for continuity. He will join host Ryan Seacrest as the only Idol on-air talent who have been on the show since the first season in 2002. In addition to the judge shakeups, with Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Jackson leaving, the changes on Idol going into next season also include David Hill succeeding Fox reality head Mike Darnell in overseeing the show and Per Blankens, Jesse Ignjatovic & Evan Prager replacing Nigel Lythgoe and Ken Warwick as executive producers.

Dr. Luke is out of the running to be AI judge.

Dr. Luke Will Not Judge 'American Idol'

Despite reports to the contrary, hit-maker Dr. Luke will not be joining American Idol as a judge on season 13, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The songwriter and producer, who's credited on such global smashes as Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone" and "My Life Would Suck Without You," Pink's "Who Knew" and Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl," among others, was among the last candidates standing after a months-long search for a third judge to join returning panel members Keith Urban and Jennifer Lopez (the latter has not officially been announced).

However, as THR wrote on Aug. 24, Luke, whose real name is Lukasz Gottwald, was bound to run into a snag with Sony Music. The music giant signed Luke to a lucrative label deal in 2011 (his Kemosabe imprint is home to songwriter-turned-solo artist Bonnie Mckee, rapper Juicy J and pop-urban act Becky G, who herself said at last night's MTV Video Music Awards, "I think [Idol] is going to happen" for Luke, but Sony's competitor, Universal Music Group, holds the exclusive rights to American Idol recordings.

Allowing Luke to spend months of the year judging and nurturing talent then developing said artists for another label makes little business sense for the company that invested so deeply in his own hit-making power. L.A. Reid faced a similar obstacle when he was in the running for the Idol gig prior to season 10. It was, in fact, what helped lead the veteran executive to Fox's other singing competition, X Factor, which has a recording partnership with Sony. Reid left after two years on the show.

For Luke's part, says an insider close to the situation, the hit-maker came to the realization that the commitment would simply demand too much of his time. "He really loves his artists and wants to build up the label," a source tells THR, adding that Kemosabe is "on the cusp" of breaking Becky G, a top priority for the imprint and the company overall. Beyond the label's current projects, "Luke wants to build an entertainment company ... after a lot of conversations, both Luke and Sony Music CEO Doug Morris came to the mutual agreement that taking Dr. Luke out of the Idol running "was the best thing for all parties."

Who's left on the short list? Among the contenders is Justin Bieber manager Scooter Braun, an eleventh-hour suggestion by Lopez. The charismatic ex-party promoter and marketing whiz is seemingly open to the idea and has his own label deal with UMG, putting him on the right side of the Idol loyalty fence. But with a roster than includes newcomer Ariana Grande, K-Pop sensation Psy and boy band The Wanted, Braun, like Luke (who owns a publishing company in addition to his hands-on work in the studio), is spread thin.

Idol is soon to enter its 2014 season in earnest. In years past, auditions would start in September.

Fox declined comment.

A big fat NO.

Harry Connick Jr. is the third judge:

Harry Connick Jr. is returning to "American Idol" -- this time, in a judge's seat. The singer, who has appeared on the Fox reality competition multiple times as a mentor and performer, is inking a deal to serve as a judge alongside Keith Urban and Jennifer Lopez on the upcoming 13th season, a source close to the show tells The Hollywood Reporter.

The news comes one week after THR revealed that Dr. Luke, previously considered a frontrunner for the position, dropped out of negotiations due to a conflict with his label at Sony Music. (Sony rival Universal Music Group holds exclusive rights to "American Idol" recordings.)

Earlier this week, THR reported that Connick was a contender for the gig as Fox was reluctant to bring another woman on board after last season's friction between Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj, which did not play well with the show's key older female demographic. While the network had hoped to bring an industry professional into the mix, time is of the essence. Had the show not signed a third judge soon, production could have faced a delay.

On Thursday evening, Idol producer Simon Fuller hosted a small party in the champagne room of Los Angeles hotspot Bouchon with series mainstay Randy Jackson (who will move from judge to mentor in the upcoming season), Urban, Lopez and Connick on hand to toast the forthcoming announcement.

Friday morning, Ryan Seacrest set fans' tongues wagging with a tweet: "Got some @AmericanIdol news for you coming very soon…"

Fox declined to comment.

I'm still a little bitter about this. They had freaking Mariah Carey last year and still needed Nicki Minaj?! Had they gone with 3 judges things would have turned out differently and Mariah/the audience would have enjoyed the experience.
Notice that there's no black people on the panel this year?! Judges were carefully chosen so they wouldn't alienate Middle America again.

^I read that FOX really wanted to find a black judge, but couldn't find anyone who wanted the gig. I agree with what you on last season, I don't think the ratings would've dropped near as far as they did had they not hired Nicki and it would've been a far better show to watch as well.

Randy Jackson is black and he was a judge for 12 years.  Will.i.am (who is also black) was their first choice this season, but that fell through.  So did Dr. Luke (Sony wouldn't let him).  They had to settle for Harry Connick Jr.  Carefully chosen?  I don't think so.

Michael K isn't impressed with the new judges. He's not going to get the side eye anymore from last season so he's checked out! lol

Three Styrofoam cups full of room-temperature tap water would be better American Idol judges than JLo, Keith Urban and Harry Connick Jr.

Nigel Lythgoe on ‘Idol’ Judge News: “It Feels a Bit Like a Kick in the Teeth”

On Tuesday, it was officially announced that the judging panel for "American Idol" Season 13 will be Jennifer Lopez, Harry Connick Jr., and Keith Urban. Ironically, this was actually the "dream team" suggested by longtime "Idol" producer Nigel Lythgoe, before he was fired from the show earlier this year. So Nigel got his way in the end — but it was all too little, too late.

On Tuesday evening backstage at his other Fox franchise, "So You Think You Can Dance," Nigel was candid when speaking about his reaction to that morning's "Idol" news. "Both [fellow ousted 'Idol' producer] Ken Warwick and myself asked for that team last year. It feels a bit like a kick in the teeth," he admitted. "But I'm thrilled for 'American Idol.' At least they've made one good decision this season!"

When asked if the door would ever be open for him to return to "Idol" in light of this development — and in light of the news that veteran judge Randy Jackson, who supposedly left the show this year, will be back next season as the series' in-house mentor — Nigel answered, "I very much doubt it." He then added: "I think Randy is a fantastic ambassador, [but] I'm sorry that they've lost [former mentor] Jimmy Iovine. Jimmy Iovine was a good voice and a good opinion, whether you agreed with him or disagreed with him."

Nigel didn't totally bad-mouth his old workplace, however, claiming that the J.Lo/Harry/Keith panel might be "Idol's" best yet, and saying, "It's going to be an interesting season, one that I think they've now put on the right track...It's never going to be the same, it's never going to be in that 35-40 million mark, but the program is still brilliant…For me, every single season that I worked on 'American Idol,' even when we were going downhill last season, has been brilliant. It's been an honor to work on it."

"American Idol" Season 13 will kick off in January 2014. The "So You Think You Can Dance" Season 10 finale will air next Tuesday, September 10.

Yeah, three artists in their 40s (at least) who aren't exactly relevant musically anymore are definitely the best panel to be judging someone to become a relevant music star

Half the people I know don't even know who Keith and Harry are. They just need to end Idol. Nigel really needs to shut up. It was his fault that Nicki was on there.

Randy has been a judge for 12 years but last year was too much for (middle America) viewers to deal with (Nicki), so of course they were going to be extra careful this year. Harry Connick Jr was hired as a judge a long time ago but they had to throw some "names" out there first to make sure they were giving everyone a fair chance. Are you surprised how shady and manipulative Fox/the produces are after all they did to Mariah?! It goes beyond what we know.
I know a little bit about it because my bf used to work for Fox 25 Boston a few years ago (2009 i think) when they were doing auditions there and the produces/fox were literally evil. (and so was Ryan and Cara he said smiley: laugh)

doesn't matter who the judges are, if the show has that same tired boring format, ratings will keep dropping. They need to revamp the show itself, not the judges table.

How many times can you watch country night or Beatles night. They need to revamp. Good thing they stuck with three judges, but I thought Harry was an actor. They are really playing to white middle America.

Tonight was the last audition city.  There a lots of format changes.  The Green Mile is back.  Iovine is gone, Randy replaced him, doing some kind of workshop with the contestants who make it pass the Hollywood rounds, helping them learn the process, song selection, performance tips etc.  Things like that.  I don't like Harry all that much.  He was a bit of a dick last season.

Here are the Mariah-penned songs pre-approved.  So far, nobody has sung one in the Hollywood rounds.

How is this season going so far? I haven't seen any of the auditions. I did read that Harry is supposedly doing a great job.

Just read a few comments and people seem to love Harry and his chemistry with Keith. He is apparently doing a good job judging. Haven't deem it though and I don't care. Not even Mariah made me watch it.

My issue with Harry will always be he doesn't like runs or melisma. He's made comments to some contestants about toning it down during the auditions, but I didn't like they way he said it last season when he mentored. Other than that, he's funny and knows his music stuff. Mariah was anticipated to be like that, but we saw how that went down.

The show has gone out of it's way to say it's changed from what happened last year when the judges drama in the promo's and how it's being edited. The new reality chief and producers are doing a good job. The joke contestants are few and far between (they are still there, but not prominently shown). Guitars are back with a vengeance.

One of my favorite contestants from last season (one of the Brianna's) is back, so I'm happy.

I've caught the last few episodes. Harry knows his stuff technically, I just still don't see how it is relevant to today's music scene.

I have a crush on that guy who did "Say Something." Not sure how good he is in general, but that was a perfect song choice. And his reactions to getting through were self-effacing and hot

I found it funny on AI this week when Harry said about the guy singing "If I Were A Boy," "It's like, 'okay we get it.' Trying to be cute." Um, Harry, you're always trying to be cute with your snarky comments. And then they made him sing again because they were talking. Mess.
