Luke Bryan Nets No. 1 Album, Katy Perry's 'Roar' Tops Digital Songs

By Keith Caulfield, L.A. | August 21, 2013 11:00 AM EDT

K. Michelle debuts at No. 2, while "Roar" and Lady Gaga's "Applause" make their Digital Songs bows.

As reported yesterday, country star Luke Bryan nabs his second No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 with "Crash My Party." The album bows atop the list with nearly 528,000 sold in the week ending Sunday, Aug. 18, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

"Crash My Party" follows his previous chart-topper, "Spring Break . . . Here to Party," which opened at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 dated March 23.

The new album logs the third-largest sales week of 2013, surpassed only by the debuts of Justin Timberlake's "The 20/20 Experience" (968,000) and Jay Z's "Magna Carta . . . Holy Grail" (slightly more than 528,000).

"Crash My Party" also claims the largest week for an album by a male country artist since 2004. Tim McGraw was the last male country artist to sell more copies in a week, when his "Live Like You Were Dying" bowed with 766,000 in November 2004.

Bryan is miles ahead of the No. 2 album this week, K. Michelle's "Rebellious Soul." The set opens in the runner-up slot with 72,000 and also lands at No. 1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and Top R&B Albums charts.

The artist (familiar to fans of VH1's "Love and Hip-Hop: Atlanta") nets the highest debut on the Billboard 200 for a female R&B singer's first album since March 2011. That month, Marsha Ambrosius' "Late Nights & Early Mornings" also debuted at No. 2. (Ambrosius is formerly of the duo Floetry, which charted three albums before Ambrosius went solo.)

After we leave the top two rungs on the Billboard 200, the rest of the top 10 is fairly uneventful. The "Now 47" album slips 2-3 (52,000; down 27%), and Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" descends 3-4 (48,000; down 26%). Last week's No. 1, the Civil Wars' self-titled album, falls to No. 5 with 39,000 (down 66%).

Jay Z's "Magna Carta . . . Holy Grail" falls 4-6 (37,000; down 23%), the "Teen Beach Movie" soundtrack moves 6-7 (33,000; down 13%), and Florida Georgia Line's "Here's to the Good Times" rises 10-8 (31,000; up 19%). Imagine Dragons' "Night Visions" (7-9 with 27,000; down 26%) and Five Finger Death Punch's "The Wrong Side of Heaven and the Righteous Side of Hell" (8-10 with 22,000; down 38%) close out the top 10.

Over on the Digital Songs chart, Katy Perry's "Roar" bows at No. 1 with a whopping 557,000 downloads. The song finished the week with a larger-than-expected sales sum. On Sunday, Aug. 18, forecasters had suggested the song was on course to sell 525,000-550,000 downloads by the close of that week's business (Aug. 18). That projection was increased from an original forecast of 400,000, made on the song’s release date, Aug. 12.

The debut for “Roar” marks the sixth-largest sales week for a digital song ever, Perry's own best sales week and the biggest for her label, Capitol Records.

The only other larger weeks were logged on the chart by Flo Rida's "Right Round" (a debut with 636,000 in 2009), Ke$ha's "TiK ToK" (610,000; 2009), Bruno Mars' "Grenade" (559,000; 2010) and Taylor Swift's "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" (a debut with 623,000; 2012) and "I Knew You Were Trouble" (582,000; 2012).

But wait, there's more: "Roar" also logs the third-biggest debut for a digital song. Only "Right Round" (636,000) and "We Are Never . . ." (623,000) started with bigger numbers.

"Roar" is the lead single from Perry's "Prism" album, which is due for release on Oct. 22.

A total of three debuts arrive in the top 10 of the Digital Songs chart this week, including Perry's "Roar." And all three of them start in the top five—the first time that's happened since last October. (On the Digital Songs chart dated Oct. 20, 2012, One Direction, Swift and Adele bowed at Nos. 1-3, respectively, with "Live While We're Young," "Red" and "Skyfall.")

Last week's No. 1 Digital Song, Thicke's "Blurred Lines" (featuring. T.I. and Pharrell), falls to No. 2 with 291,000 (down 16%).

At No. 3 is the second debut of the week: Lady Gaga arrives with "Applause." It sold 218,000 downloads in its opening frame and marks her 13th top 10 hit on the Digital Songs chart. It's her best sales week since "The Edge of Glory" debuted with 266,000 downloads at No. 2 on the May 28, 2011, chart.

"Applause" is the first single from Gaga's "ARTPOP" album, which arrives Nov. 11.

A step below Gaga is Jay Z's "Holy Grail," featuring Timberlake, which slips two rungs to No. 4 with 178,000 (though it’s up by 7%).

Bryan captures the third top 10 debut, as his "That's My Kind of Night" enters at No. 5 with 164,000. It's the new radio-promoted single from his album "Crash My Party."

Miley Cyrus' "We Can't Stop" falls 3-6 (148,000; down 6%) while Avicii's "Wake Me Up!" is pushed backwards 6-7 despite a 22% gain to 138,000 downloads.

Imagine Dragons' "Radioactive" tumbles 4-8 (121,000; down 9%) while Lana Del Rey & Cedric Gervais' "Summertime Sadness" is steady at No. 9 (117,000; up 15%). Lorde's No. 1 Alternative airplay hit "Royals" surges into the top 10 (15-10) with 107,000 (up 39%).

Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending Aug. 18) totaled 5.1 million units, up 8% compared with the sum last week (4.7 million) and down 3% compared with the comparable sales week of 2012 (5.3 million). Year-to-date album sales stand at 176.1 million, down 6% compared with the same total at this point last year (187.5 million).

Digital track sales this past week totaled 23.1 million downloads, up 4% compared with last week (22.1 million) and down 7% stacked next to the comparable week of 2012 (24.8 million). Year-to-date track sales are at 843.3 million, down 3% compared with the same total at this point last year (870.2 million).

Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2012 when: Trey Songz's "Chapter V" bowed at No. 1 with 135,000 while the previous week's leader, 2 Chainz's "Based On a T.R.U. Story," slipped to No. 2 with 48,000.

'Blurred Lines,' featuring T.I. and Pharrell, leads for an 11th week, fending off Katy Perry's 'Roar,' which rockets 85-2. Plus, Lady Gaga's 'Applause' debuts at No. 6

In an extremely close race, Robin Thicke tops the Billboard Hot 100 for an 11th week with "Blurred Lines" (featuring T.I. and Pharrell). The song narrowly holds off Katy Perry's "Roar," which blasts 85-2 following its first full week of sales. Lady Gaga's "Applause" adds to the top 10's shakeup, debuting at No. 6, also after its first week of sales.

Despite "Roar" arriving as the top-selling song in the U.S., Thicke's lead in streaming and airplay is just enough for "Lines" to fend off Perry's challenge.

"Lines" leads Radio Songs for a seventh week, gaining by 1% to a record-extending 228.9 million all-format audience impressions, according to Nielsen BDS. It posts a seventh week atop the subscription services-based On-Demand Songs chart (1.8 million U.S. streams, down 13%, according to BDS), while holding at No. 2 on Streaming Songs (6.6 million, down 13%). On Digital Songs, "Lines" dips 1-2 after 10 frames on top with 291,000 downloads sold (down 16%), according to Nielsen SoundScan.

The song also logs an 11th week at No. 1 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and a 14th week atop R&B Songs, while becoming just the 18th title to dominate the Hot 100 for at least 11 weeks.

Despite its declines in sales and streaming, "Lines" manages to maintain its spot atop the Hot 100 over "Roar," which makes the chart's greatest positional jump since Drake's "Make Me Proud" (featuring Nicki Minaj) flew 97-9 the week of Nov. 5, 2011; it's the largest leap for a song by a lead female since Carrie Underwood's "Cowboy Casanova" galloped 96-11 the week of Oct. 10, 2009.

"Lines" and "Roar," in fact, are separated by just a 3.3% difference in overall chart points (with "Lines" down by 9% and "Roar" up by 1,262%).

"Roar" does just that, skyrocketing 85-2 in its second week on the Hot 100. Last week, the song dented the chart via its No. 29 start on Radio Songs (40 million) due solely to its first four days of airplay. The song vaults with top Airplay Gainer honors, lifting 29-13 on Radio Songs (63 million, up 56%). Still, it's the track's first week of sales that largely powers its Hot 100 move, as "Roar" debuts atop Digital Songs with 557,000. As previously reported, the bow marks the sixth-largest sales week for a digital song, Perry's best sum and the biggest total for Capitol Records.

"Roar" also charges onto Streaming Songs at No. 4 (3.8 million) and No. 12 on On-Demand Songs (910,000). On the former chart, the track marks the highest debut by a solo female dating to the list's launch the week of Jan. 26.

With its flight, "Roar" becomes Perry's 12th Hot 100 top 10 and first since her last entry, "Wide Awake," reached No. 2 a year ago. Of her 13 radio-promoted singles as a lead act dating to her seven-week No. 1 breakout smash "I Kissed a Girl" in 2008, she's missed the top tier only with "Thinking of You" (No. 29, 2009). Among her haul are seven No. 1s, including five from her last album, "Teenage Dream," which joined Michael Jackson's "Bad" (1987-88) as the only sets ever to yield five Hot 100 No. 1s. "Roar" previews Perry's follow-up album "Prism," due Oct. 22.

Does Perry's runner-up start on the Hot 100 mean that "Roar" won't reach No. 1? Not necessarily. Airplay for "Lines," while still gaining, appears to be cresting, while its sales and streaming continue to decline. As airplay for "Roar" rises, along with expected streaming gains, sustained strong sales could still push it to the Hot 100's apex. For instance, "California Gurls" (featuring Snoop Dogg), the lead single from "Teenage Dream," also entered the Hot 100 at No. 2 (May 29, 2010). It dipped to No. 3 and then rebounded to No. 2 before spending six weeks at No. 1. Similar to how "Roar" trails an established smash in "Lines," "Gurls" waited out Usher's "OMG" (featuring will.i.am), which topped the Hot 100 in each of the first three chart weeks for "Gurls" before the latter took over at the top.

As Perry powers to No. 2 on the Hot 100, Miley Cyrus' "We Can't Stop" drops 2-3 after three nonconsecutive weeks at its No. 2 peak. Still, "Stop" scores a ninth week atop Streaming Songs (6.9 million, down 11%). It slides 3-6 on Digital Songs (148,000, down 6%) but advances 22-18 on Radio Songs (51 million, up 8%).

Imagine Dragons' "Radioactive" descends 3-4 on the Hot 100, while leading Hot Rock Songs for a record-padding 22nd week. It holds at its No. 2 highpoint on Radio Songs for a second week (119 million, down 1%).

Jay Z's "Holy Grail" (featuring Justin Timberlake) tallies a third week at its No. 5 peak so far on the Hot 100. The collaboration bounds 14-11 on Radio Songs (71 million, up 19%) and backtracks 2-4 on Digital Songs, although with a 7% gain to 178,000, and 8-11 on Streaming Songs, also with an increase (of 1% to 2.8 million). It tops Rap Songs for a fourth week.

Joining Perry with a Hot 100 top 10 entrance this week is Lady Gaga, whose "Applause" debuts at No. 6. Following its radio and retail release on Aug. 19, the track begins on Digital Songs at No. 3 (218,000), Streaming Songs at No. 9 (2.9 million) and Radio Songs at No. 40 (31 million, up 97%; it registered 16 million in last week's airplay tracking period after less than two days of availability.) Having premiered the official video for "Applause" on Monday (Aug. 19), the song is likely to make significant streaming gains to be reflected next week.

The sums propel Gaga to her first No. 1 on the Dance/Electronic Songs chart (which premiered in January), where it darts 16-1.

Like Perry, Gaga nabs her 12th Hot 100 top 10 with "Applause" (which marks her third-highest debut, following the No. 1-bowing "Born This Way" and the No. 3-starting "The Edge of Glory" in 2011). She'd last appeared in the top bracket almost two years ago with the No. 6-peaking "You and I," one of four top 10s from "Born This Way," her last proper studio set. "Applause" ushers in "ARTPOP," due Nov. 11.

Daft Punk's "Get Lucky" (featuring Pharrell) dives 4-7 on the Hot 100 after peaking at No. 2 for five weeks. With the coronation of "Applause," "Lucky" cedes the Dance/Electronic Songs summit after a record 13-week reign.

Rounding the Hot 100's top 10 are Bruno Mars' "Treasure" (7-8); Anna Kendrick's "Cups (Pitch Perfect's When I'm Gone)" (6-9); and Capital Cities' "Safe and Sound" (9-10).

Visit Billboard.com tomorrow (Aug. 22), when all rankings, including the Hot 100 in its entirety and Digital Songs, Radio Songs, Streaming Songs and On-Demand Songs will be refreshed, as they are each Thursday.

So I guess "Roar" doesn't have any chance of being #1 next week? (considering sales won't be as strong as they were on its first week and that radio and streaming are still well below "Blurred Lines"). How many weeks do you all think it will take for "Roar" to top the Hot 100? Please don't say 5 more.

^Nope. It might take a couple of more weeks. Blurred Lines airplay advantage is just too strong.

Once Katy debuts her new video, maybe that will make a difference. We'll see.

Katy could be #1 next week, her sales are still strong. Robin only sold 291k with combined versions and his streaming is also falling.

Eh, I don't care about the Loverboy "record." But #Thicke has his eye on One Sweet Day and I'm not having it.

Do you all think this is the closest someone has been of beating OSD's record? I know there are songs that have stayed longer than 11 weeks at #1 after OSD but asides from that, considering the inmense and unprecedented success of "Blurred Lines", can we say this is the biggest threat OSD has had to this day? I know with "Roar" released it's not likely Robin will stay at the top enough weeks to surpass the record, but what if Katy Perry hadn't released "Roar"? What if she had released a flop?! smiley: nerd

I think Tamar is way more visible than all of those ladies were though. She has reality TV, a talk show and she'll certainly do promo.

When 'Love and War' debuted, she did more promo than all of those girls did in their album release week Vince will work it out

^Maybe it will be like K. Michelle said, she'll get Vince to buy all of those albums to bump up her sales.

I don't like K. Michelle's attitude, but I think it's funny when she went in on Tamar calling her Kermit and talking about her lip synching, buying her own singles and Toni not being a star in almost in 20 years. It was so wrong.

Tamar started this whole feud. Now she has to feel the wrath of that psycho.
