^ LMAO, even Rihanna made the list twice!

The gap between Adele and the rest of the list is also insane. Congrats to Gaga on having the #2 album of the year with her "flop."

The gap after Adele is ridiculous. And yeesss for calling out the hater and bandwagon, I'm fully anticipating a ton of remarks on why BTW is a flop. smiley: laugh

You can't be that naive. You've GOT to realise that 5.4 million WW for the supposedly biggest star ATM, is pretty lame.

And damn @ Beyonce. Her album sales took a TUMBLE. Her first 3 CDs were consistent, didn't Sasha Fierce do 3 mill in the US alone? The public was not feeling "Bore."

1. Who said she was the world's biggest star?
2. Since when does massive fame translate to record sales?
3. The fact is she still had the second biggest album of the year despite the 'backlash' so everyone can suck it.

"4" definitely was a flop in comparison to her previous three albums that all sold 6-9 million worldwide.

I agree. Album sales have been free-falling (barring the UK, Australia and Japan and Germany to an extent) since the beginning of the digital era in 2005.

2011
Albums that sold over 4 million : 4
Albums that sold over 2 million : 13

2005
Albums that sold over 4 million : 10
Albums that sold over 2 million : 27

I don't think anyone logical has said the album was a FLOP, but it has certainly underperformed just like Mariah's "Emotions" did in comparison to "Mariah Carey".

Oh, of course, that's why I put flop in quotes. I would agree that it underperformed- but only according to the standard Gaga set for herself. I was just pointing out the irony of it still out-selling nearly every other release.

Jesus. Any predictions for what 2016 - 5 years from now - will be like?

I think album sales will eventually stagnate and go up some (this year and last year there hasn't been much of a decrease), but I don't know if we'll ever see 2.5 BILLION albums being bought worldwide in a year like 1989-2004 (from 1994-2001 over 3 billion were bought). Even in 2005, 2.3 billion albums were bought worldwide, we're around 1.2 billion now (the lowest since since 1978). smiley: sick

She obviously is the biggest star of the last couple of years. Questions #2: since The Fame sold 16 million worldwide.

I know, its horrorfying. Beyond Adele, pretty much everyone else on that list is shameful beyond Buble who has shifted so many albums in such a short period of time. Interesting to finally get figures for 4 - it sold less than even I expected. 1 million only worldwide, 1 mil US basically.

Ouch. I still wouldn't could it a flop but its dangerously close.

It scares me that something like 70% of that chart is filled with albums that have only done 1.5 million......and this is now considered a big selling amount to get into the Top 40. The industry really has changed and I think people need to start looking at the benchmark for sales to reflect it. Apart from 21's insane success, the general global target for albums from a big pop star can realistically only be between 5-7 million and no more.

I agree with both of you. BTW has definetly underperformed compared to her last album but its sales are more than healthy. Unless she rolls out a third album that is a total turkey, I think she can easily sell 5-6 million per album as a standard and thats more than acceptable for a pop star of her level.

We're all better off accepting that Fame Monster level success was a fluke and won't be happening again for her.

Not to keep arguing, but the notion of a 'star' is an interesting one. Gaga is certainly the most ubiquitous music act of the last few years, but does that translate to 'star power' the way most think of it? How do her magazines sell, for example, compared to other A-list covers? She's certainly not a tabloid star, which I think is a good thing, but does that translate to the general public being invested in her?

My other point was that often when people have huge 'star power', it doesn't mean their music necessarily sells. It's often to the contrary- Adele was basically a nobody when '21' took off.

As Carlos said, The Fame's sales (let's also not forget that she had a re-release which was basically a separate project) were basically a fluke and it's kinda nuts to expect her to keep matching that standard. I won't be screaming FLOP if Adele's next record only does 5-7 mill WW. BTW is ultimately an example of what happens when an artist has so much initial success that the label allows them to be as over-the-top and self-indulgent as they want on the next album. I feel that there will be a bit of a re-direction on her next proper release.

While I don't quite agree with your logic on Gaga's star power, I do think we're at that point where her third album will really settle the issues we've been discussing on Gaga for much of this year. There are only two possibilities for me -

1) Born This Way was something of a mis-step and with a better re-direction she will be back to selling The Fame/Fame Monster style numbers as a standard. This frankly isn't going to be the case but there you go. The way some people talk they really do believe she can do 13 million plus like its an everyday thing in the industry and not a 21 style fluke.

2) Born This Way is her settling into her realistic sales amount that will define her career while she is still successful. In an industry where albums generally do no more than 7 million, this will be her peak. So with BTW coming in at over 5, this project too would be considered a successful venture (which is what I class it as).
