AIWFCIY has definetly endured and risen to become (nearly) her signature song. The only problem is, its lifespan and impact is only limited to a small festive timeframe. Because of that, its still going to be Hero and the song Mariah will always end her concerts on each and every time. Which says it all.

In the Netherlands they always have a much publicised year end countdown with the greatest 2000 songs voted by listeners.
Mariah's only entry is "All I want for Christmas" coming in at 1246 and it has charted each year since 2004. Just saying.

Recently I read a Yahoo article on how from 50 years on Mariah will be probably remembered AIWFCIY despite having other hits like Brenda Lee.
WBT is still popular in US so that may be in line. But it changes from country to country as Liron said. Here it is My All and Without You - given we dont celebrate christmas AIWFCIY is not as popular.

However i think ABMB could have been more popular if she worked on it a bit more instead of singing MIH for the gazillionth time in specials, shows etc.

I feel Hero is more like a signature song by Mariah. AIWFCIY is like a classic holiday song which everyone likes but seldom gives credit to whoever sings it. If just a regular folk goes to see Mariah Carey's concert I guess the person would more expect her to sing HERO than AIWFCIY.

I'd have to agree with "Hero". I would agree with AIWFCIY, all of the points made for that are valid. But the song kind of transcends Mariah to a point where people don't necessarily look at her and think "She sings that great Christmas song." When that song resurfaces every year, it's more like "Forget everything else I think about Mariah Carey. I love this song." So you could say "biggest hit" but I wouldn't say "signature" any other time than the holidays. In Japan, perhaps. They love that song all year.

Think of whenever there's a generic event: Whether it's a charity telethon or the Wal Mart shareholders convention: She is always expected to do "Hero". That's why it's almost always the closer of the show or the encore.

Just my thoughts.

They love All I Want For Christmas Is You here all year long too. Last summer I was at a party and went up to the DJ to ask for a Mariah song. I said that I didn't mind which song he would play as long as it wasn't AIWFCIY. But as he didn't have any other MC song, he did play it and although it was hot outside, the crowd went wild. It was really fun to see how everybody reacted to it mid summer!

Hero, definetly.

What makes a song a "signature" song is that it's the first song that comes to mind to average people when named. That's Hero.

AIWFCIY definetly is her most appreciated song and probably biggest worlwide hit in terms of popularity and longetivity, but probably 80% of the people that love it don't know is a Mariah song.

I don't think she has just one signature song, but several. Including AIWFCIY, Hero, WBT, and the Fantasy Remix.

^What do we mean by "signature song"?The first song that comes to most people's minds when they think of Mariah Carey? Are we talking about a "signature song" in the US only or worlwide? If we are only talking about the States, then you are right..Hero,ABMB,Fantasy,WBT all fall into that category..But worldwide?I don't think so..

Mariah doesn't have one in the vein of I Will Always Love you or My Heart Will Go On, she has several. I don't buy that All I Want For Christmas Is You is her signature song...yet. It might be massive year after year for a 2 month window period, but that's it.

For now I'd go with Hero, Always Be My Baby, and/or We Belong Together.

In that case I'd say Without You and All I Want For Christmas Is You are her signature songs in Europe.
Here in the Netherlands probably Vision Of Love as it is a song which is sung often at talent shows like X-Factor.

We Belong Together has not stood the test of time.  Great song, but did not stand the test of time.

This turned into an interesting discussion

And I know we've talked about this a million times, but I don't think we have right after Christmas.  As someone said, 20, 30 years from now when people look back at Mariah's music, I think All I Want For Christmas Is You is going to stand out as being the most associated with her.  The only reason Hero is on people's minds is because she still performs is so much.  If she hadn't, I don't think people here would be saying that.  I don't think the general public cares anymore about Hero than they do any other huge Mariah hit.

I think people distinguish Hero because Mariah has performed it at several special occasions..like the 9/11 telethon,Obama's inauguration ball and the list goes on..

Has 'WBT' stood the test of time though? I don't think it's the song people associate with her. Maybe it's different because it was so much bigger in the states but in the UK I don't really hear it getting played anymore. I think unlike songs like 'Hero' or 'AIWFCIY' which have a timeless quality, 'WBT' was very of its time, and sounds a bit dated now.

'We Belong Together' is among Mariah's most played recurrents at different formats. I'd say many young people associate it with Mariah because they lived the TEOM era and how massive it was.
And I don't think it's dated, in fact I think the simple production with the vocal front and center makes it enjoyable as opposed to something filled with synths which are not always in style.
