I think it's fair game for us to analyse things on here but if you're deliberately pointing out to people who aren't fans the lipped moments or whatever then I'd question the motivation as a fan.
^ I don't want to sound like Mariah is innocent in all of this. For years I was imploring her to get a sound team that was professional and didn't result in loads of technical issues at her own shows or otherwise. And in fairness to her, after that Jamaica show in 2015, the sound at her shows has been much improved. The NYE mess was arguably not her fault. But the buck stops with her to make sure she doesn't get caught when she is lipping notes.
The problem I have with fans is that if they love and want to protect Mariah, they shouldn't be the first to call her out on Twitter when she lips a line here or there on a TV show. She's been lipping frequently since 1997 yet some act like its something new. Compared to Celine, Mariah will give you a lot of live vocals at her own shows. Sure, they might be better some nights than others but Celine has been charging her fans for years to watch her lip entire shows. She hasn't been called out or accused of cheating her fans and ripping them off like some Mariah fans do on social media or UKmix, which is read by blogs like That Grape Juice that have often written scathing things about Mariah that later get picked up by more mainstream outlets.
Celine went to the billboard awards a few days ago and I believe lipped 90% of the song. It gets loads of praise and positive media attention. "What a legend" blah blah blah. "Her voice hasn't changed". Total BS because on record now, her voice has gotten very thin, her tone is beyond naselly and she can barely enunciate in English now. Mariah performed at the BBMA's 2 years ago. She was nervous. She sang VOL live and sang along with a backing track for Infinity but she did sing a lot of it live. It wasn't her best TV appearance by a long shot but fans ripped into her and plenty media outlets talked about her vocal decline and the ever tired "she should retire". Mariah went to her Vegas show an hour later and sounded much better.
There's just a double standard, in the media, amongst a lot of fans too. They want to tear her down just because she isn't perfect now. She wasn't perfect back in 05 either but everyone was on her side.
Yes, it's up to Mariah to do things to change the way she's perceived now but the fans can do an awful lot more to help her too by simply shutting up when it comes to certain things.
1. THIS! We as fans have the right (if I may use that word) to talk about all things Mariah, good things, bad things, but we do it here, in a private community, where what is discussed and analysed stays behind closed doors. I will never get why these fans have created all these YouTube videos where they compare Mariah's vocals to her older vocals or point out Mariah's lipping parts in so-called live performances. What is wrong with these people? Do they actually consider themselves fans? They are to blame for all this mess. I'm not saying that Mariah is not at fault too, she is no innocent, she has her own share of responsibility for losing her credibility as a live performer but these people are unforgivable. It's like shooting yourself in the foot.
2. Everybody lipsynches and Celine is certainly no exception but, as others have said, she is so damn good at it that she easily misleads the crowds..She is soo theatrical, such a showwoman that you just don't pay attention to the rest. Mariah is so stiff and uncomfortable which makes it more difficult to cover it up. She either makes no move or starts walking or even running from one side of the stage to the other..
3. As I said, everybody lipsynches, it's no secret, everybody knows it and I find it so infuriating and so hypocritical that, suddenly, Mariah is the only guilty one of doing it and she is the one whose live performances are now under severe scrutiny. When did she become a scapegoat?
4. Last but not least, justice needs to be served..I am one of those people who have criticised Mariah's style (and probably will continue to do so unless she hires a new team of stylists soon
) but after seeing Celine's latest fashion craze with all these horrendous, supposedly haute couture outfits, I have to say that by far I prefer Mariah's tights, leather jackets and diamond necklaces. She may look "trashy" but human. Celine looks like she has been visiting us from outer space. I cannot believe that she is considered a fashion icon. Maybe she is going through a late mid-life crisis, I don't know, considering that nude pic she released too, but this is pure eye torture..
