Celine only sold just around 400K albums in total in the US last year. That's including her new album.

Pitiful. And she actually has decent catalog sales usually. Both Falling Into You and Let's Talk About Love have been discounted at some retailers in the past year and These Are Special Times obviously does good in the holidays.

Mariah sold 270k overall with no new release, just catalog sales.

Not a factor. Her last mainstream hit was ANHC in 2002. That's a hit.

Was that a mainstream hit? I didn't realize. I thought it peaked in the 20s on the Hot 100. What was its Top 40 peak?

#22 Hot 100, #25 Pop radio. It was a moderate hit. 'That's the Way It Is' is her last big hit (1999  wow)

Yeah, I don't see where "ANDHC" did well enough to stress "That's" in regard to mainstream, then. And it just shows how Mariah slays all of them. Celine doesn't deserve to be mentioned with Mariah. She was truly relevant for like 8-9 years, with a possible extension to 2002 to make it 12 years max. Mariah was truly relevant across nearly 20 years, and I'd say "#B" did well enough to bring in 24 years as a possibility. That's twice the length of Celine. Next.

Wouldn't "Taking Chances" (the song) be considered a hit? I don't know how it charted, but I heard the song everywhere. Even over the past 2 years after it's release. I actually never cared for it so I wasn't going out of my way to notice it.

Well, it was a hit where it needed to be… which was AC radio.  That's where her core audience was.  If it had become a hit at pop radio then great, but it was most important for it to do well at AC.  The song / video definitely helped the sales of the album, too.

As for ANDHC… I would consider that her last big hit.  It was #1 for 20+ weeks at AC!

Overall, Celine has never had a big presence at mainstream / top 40 to begin with.

#1 - Because You Loved Me
#1 - It's All Coming Back To Me Now
#1 - My Heart Will Go On
#2 - Power of Love
#3 - That's The Way It Is
#7 - All By Myself
#14 - Misled
#17 - I'm Your Angel

I still don't consider something that was a hit on a niche AC format a 'hit'. That's a small amount of people. Would the general public even be able to hum a bar from Taking Chances? Not on your life. She's not a singles artist anyway (which is fine). Her songs haven't troubled the Top 100 since 2002.

That makes it a big AC hit, but in no way makes it a big hit in general. "FLAB" was #1 at Urban AC for like 6 weeks. Do you consider that a hit in general?

You'd actually think after the whole 4 debate saga on this very topic (most echoing what you are getting at), it would be done. But no smiley: laugh

But 'Fly Like a Bird' was also top 20 on the R&B chart, so its niche success was also reflected on a bigger chart.

And it bubbled under on the Hot 100 many weeks as well.

And? It's not like it was sent to all formats and it flopped on everyone but Urban AC. It smashed on the format it was sent to.

Basically 'Taking Chances' was a fail and 'Fly Like a Bird' was a WIN. Apples and oranges.

I don't know why you're getting all defensive as I meant it as a good thing, it bubbled under on the Hot 100 based solely on Urban/Urban AC airplay. That was a big deal at the time.

Wasn't it #19 on R&B mainly because of its Urban AC play? Where did it peak in Urban play?

Regardless, a #19 on the R&B chart is barely an R&B hit and certainly isn't a hit in a general sense.
