So, I was on Spotify and MCIIY randomly came on and I was listening to The First Noel/Born Is the King Interlude - isn't this the most amazing interlude. It reminds me of 90s R&B, TLC, 'The Roof', 1993 Janet Jackson - who else wants this sound for her next studio album?!

Oh yeah, I'd love if she could do something with that kind of sound, it's like R&B sound of my childhood and not something she's really done anymore than dabble in.

TEOM was a pseudo-retro style of an album, why not do one in this style?

Now that I think about it, something like Stay the Night would actually go into Born Is the King really well - they have a true R&B sound while at thr same time it's a bit of a throwback. This sensual sound, along with the neo-soul sounds of Circles and When Christmas Comes, is totally where I'd like for her to go on the next album..

NO MORE SONGS LIKE WHEN CHRISTMAS COMES. I hate that screechy singing.

I'm personally hoping for songs like O Come All Ye Faithful on the album....meaning, songs that feature Queen Pat

You read my mind!  Circles and Stay The Night were the first two songs to pop in my head when I said she had dabbled in it a bit smiley: laugh

When Christmas Comes is still my favorite off of the X-mas album (or second favorite..)

Oh Queen Pat smiley: tongue

I do know what you mean about the screechy vocals  It really bothers me in some songs (Mine Again, I Wish You Knew) and not so much in others (STN, WCC).  I think the reason it doesn't get to me in WCC is because they bury the vocals a little bit in the mix and the music itself is really strong.

But WCC isn't nearly as screechy as Mine Again - meanwhile I thought MCIIY was one of your favs

Oh, MCIIY is possibly my favorite Mariah album of all time- yes, you read that right smiley: laugh. It's not really something I'd listen to in May though lol.

I agree that it isn't as screechy, but her vocals on the chorus still grate me. It's the weakest of the original compositions imo.

Agreed. On WCC the music and vocals 'mix' much better, whereas on Mine Again it's like they put the vocals front and center, so loud (imo because Mariah was desperate to prove she 'could still sing').

Yup, that's #2 and #3!  I'd actually never heard CBC (somehow) before her version.  I think it's beautiful though and has a hint of sadness to it.

But then this thread is here to remind you of its awesomeness. Meanwhile, how stunning is One Child? I'll say it again, Michael Jackson eat your heart out

Oh, yes, One Child is probably my favorite of the new songs. I've heard the MJ connection a lot, but I was just like, he wishes smiley: laugh

Meanwhile, I played that damn song so many times on Christmas Day, my (probably drunk) grandmother threatened to throw her drink on the stereo.smiley: rollAh, memories.

I'd never heard it before Toni Braxton's version - a slightly jazzier (and longer (over four minutes)), yet equally stunning version.

I don't really understand how a person in America could not have heard CBS smiley: laugh.

I prefer Toni's version to Mariah's because it's longer and I think Toni's voice works better, though I certainly love Mariah's version.

I'm going to give the nod to Mariah, but I like Toni's too.  Mariah's just somehow gets into a deeper, more melancholy place for me vocally while Toni's sounds more like a good performance of a standard, but it doesn't have the same emotional resonance with me.

I wish Mariah had done a longer version though like this.
