I sincerely don't want Melt Away to be a single (unless it spawned some great resung remixes), anyhow the original is too perfect I am so contented as it is now as a side track that will be appreciated and not judged by chart figure forever. I so don't wanna see it flop even if it reached no.2. And if the music video ruined the mood or mis-represented Melt Away I would be totally mad lol. Apart from that, this song is so not for live performance, and I don't wanna see any lipped version of it. :p

Debut - Singe choices were pretty perfect. I wish "Alone In Love" had some exposure, though.
Emotions - They probably did the best with what they had; this CD wasn't very commercial. I like "To Be Around You" more than "Make It Happen," but "MIH" was a new theme lyrically and is a jam live.
Music Box - "Now That I Know" was more commercial than "AYNAF," even though I like the latter more
Daydream - "Melt Away" as the fourth single; it's a gem and would have appealed to all genres
Butterfly - They did pretty good here, they just needed to promote the songs better
Rainbow - Maybe "Ex-Girlfriend" or "How Much" as the third single as both fit radio at the time; "Crybaby" is my life, though
Glitter - "All My Life" or "If We" as the lead single
Charmbracelet - I just with "TTR" had been the Oprah version as it's so much better in that arrangement; she probably needed to come out with an inspirational ballad
TEOM - "Stay The Night" over "Say Somethin'"
E=MC2 - "Migrate" as lead single or even in place of "Bye Bye" as 2nd single
Memoirs - still not sure what happened this era; "IWTKWLI" should have done a little better

It didn't need to replace it. 5th single could have been great

I think the single choices with Sony were almost flawless, so not to much to say for that era of her career except that "Underneath the Stars" should have been released (perhaps instead of or after "Forever") and "Can't Take that Away" should've never happened. "Crybaby" should have been pushed harder as a third single because that song is so classic. Post-Sony, there were lots of mistakes made...

"All My Life" (instead of "Loverboy")
"Lead the Way" (instead of "Never Too Far")
"Stay the Night" (instead of "Say Somethin'")
"So Lonely" (to end the Mimi era)
"Migrate" (instead of "Bye Bye")
"Love Story"
"Ribbon" (instead of "I Want to Know What Love Is")
"It's a Wrap" or "Candy Bling"
"When Christmas Comes" (was this actually released? I know it had an adds date but then I don't remember hearing anything about it)

It wasn't. Some UAC stations gave it some spins, but no adds date was given to the song. I hope they will push it this year with 'One Child' to AC radio.

I think a 5th single would have underperformed regardless since "Forever" pseudo-flopped at Top 40 (coming off three huge hits, a #9 peak is almost a flop) and "UTS" didn't do anything at R&B radio (I have no idea if it was truly pushed there, though). "Melt Away" would have been a nice 4th single, and then they could have targeted genres with "Forever" and "UTS" after that.

I still don't get why more genre-specific promotion hasn't happened with Mariah. "Whenever You Call" could have gone to AC when more of the urban songs from Butterfly were being pushed. Why wasn't "Against All Odds" pushed to AC radio? And then with Charmbracelet, "TTR" was the lead single but clearly didn't appeal to urban radio. Why not have pushed something else there?

^ I think with TTR it was a case of delusional/out of touch label heads who thought it was 1993 still. They probably thought it would be some huge #1 record.

That may be part of it, but it also made sense for her to come back with an inspirational ballad. I mean, to have come back with "Boy" or something wouldn't have fed into the story of her being ok and making it through a tough period. "TTR" just wasn't that good (particularly the CD version), and an AC ballad definitely wasn't going to appeal to many markets at that point.
