Celine is not a legend at all, she's a 90s relic like Boyz II Men or Toni Braxton. Please don't lump her together with Mariah. Whitney, who is a legend, did a reality show (not that it was a good example of a classy reality show, but still )
Celine Dion is not a legend but Mariah is?How so?

Just adding that Celine is much more respected than Mariah both in the States and internationally. And certainly more than Whitney who is a complete joke.

Is Celine Dion respected that much? I mean, I find from what I've garnered she seems to epitomise cheesy, schmaltzy music in people's opinions. Even moreso than Mariah or Whitney.

I think the matter point here is that overall the general public view is more favourable and positive towards her.She is considered a class act.People have far more respect for her than Mariah.I've never heard anyone talk about Celine the way they do about Mariah.

Mariah is perceived as crazy and trashy, where as Celine is perceived as boring and weird. I know which one I would prefer.

I don't really mind Mariah being called "crazy" because we all know she really is....She has a personality, she is fun,she is high-spirited etc.She is Mariah! But I don't like people calling her trashy and "whoriah" and all those derogatory names.

My problem is musicdayflycharm and its constant spewing of utter nonsense, for years. It is always such a negative b!tch towards Mariah and I just hate idiots in general.

No. I'd rather Mariah focus on making more money by touring and expanding her audience internationally.

While Celine is - to me - a legend, I'd be interested in how you concluded this respect part.

Whats your basis for that? Celine is what, loved and credible? The woman hasn't had a hit in a decade and few people under the age of 30 care who she is, listen to her music or would rush out for her newest single (media or consumers). Mariah, on the other hand, has this - Obsessed was undeniable proof. People can't see Mariah as that much of a joke - they still seem to like her and her music.

Celine undoubtedly has more respect from older audiences, but Mariah is obviously more musically relevant. This debate is pointless.

Reality TV is for hasbeens. No artist during a time of success has starred on reality TV, see Britney Spears, Whitney Houston, Brandy, and Toni Braxton.

Not to be facetious, but what 'recent' success has Mariah had? Her last 2 studios albums were a flop. We can assume, but we have no idea of what stage of her career she's in right now...Just saying.
Her last two albums had 'Obsessed' a hit, and 'Oh Santa' and #1 Holiday Hit. I would consider those two songs a success. Her TV concert special last year scored higher ratings than Beyonce and Taylor Swifts concerts that aired around the same time. You act as if she's completely irrelevant to music like Toni or Brandy. Facetious indeed.

But you have Sarah Michelle Gellar as an idol, so your opinion on the matter can't really be taken seriously.

Mariahs career is in a bit of a nebulous position, in that I would say its impossible to gauge right now. Periods around 2001-2004 were a pretty easy call. But we've seen her become inconsistent in very short periods of time from TEOM onwards. Big hit singles, albums that flounder......it was less than two years ago she released a non-event flop in the same breath as a highly successful single.

Its a tough one to call. I agree with Erica, the way it is now, its impossible to write Mariah off. Nor would I hedge bets on her having consistent success or mammoth victories commercially. It seems things can and do go either way for her musically these days.

I'm not against a Mariah reality show. I don't think it would negatively effect her music career. The only thing that can negatively effect her music career is bad single releases because she's incapable of making a bad album imo. It would be much talked-about and I think the general public would finally realize she's not a stuck-up diva, and really a fun person with an amazing personality.

My only thing is if she did do one, it HAS to be on either MTV or Vh1 or one of the major networks of course. No E! WEtv, Oxygen, Style, BET, TV One, Bravo, Lifetime or other cable outlets. MTV, Vh1 or Major network ONLY.

So we all agree that her next move-musically speaking-must be well thought-out and calculated. It will be crucial. She needs to reinvent herself,do sth.

i agree, if anything it would make her more accessible to those who aren't her hardcore fans and aren't aware of how great a personality/sense of humor she really has. however i would add Bravo to the list of "major" networks - they have some very successful reality franchises i.e. the real housewives, top chef, tabitha's salon takeover, etc.

Agreed. I'm one that believes her musical failures since TEOM have been the result of poor single choices. The era's start off fine, but quickly go downward as the result of a bad 2nd single (Bye Bye and IWTKWLI). I remember when they announced IWTKWLI as the 2nd single, I knew immediately the album was done. And then that super delayed AWFUL video smh. A younger artist like Rihanna, Beyonce or Nelly Furtado can start an album with a hit, have a flop, then later rebound on the same project with a hit. Mariah, who is an anomaly (An female singer in her late 30's-40's releasing hits) and has to grab radio and young folks attention and then hold it to remain relevant for an era. Once interest is lost in a project for her, its lost and there's no coming back.

With the right songs and marketing, she can pump out a another hit album or two and at the very least release a few more hits songs.

Yeah, I love Bravo. I just personally feel like MTV and Vh1 just makes sense for a music star of her caliber. I mean listen to the names of Bravo's most popular reality shows; a show about  revamping salon's, chef's and housewives that really aren't housewives. I watch them all, but no, not the network for Mariah. Plus MTV and Vh1 reality shows garner the highest ratings of any cable networks reality shows.
