DIL is my fave Beyonce album. But before you get all euphoric, I think all her other albums SUCKsmiley: laugh
It's weird that one is your fav since even her fans in general think it's the weakest.

Except Beyoncé had 5 great singles from her debut, whereas Alicia had just 1. Not on par in my eyes. And in terms of album tracks Dangerously In Love has more interesting songs on it, even though they get boring too.

Come on now, let's be real here. Both Alicia and Beyonce's debuts are filler messes with a couple of hot singles. The only real difference is the fact that Alicia sold like 2 million more of her album, despite the fact that Beyonce had many more and bigger hits. And it managed to nab a major Grammy (SOTY), which Beyonce failed to do. So in that sense, Alicia's debut is more of a classic, even though neither album is a classic by any means.

Songs In A Minor was always one of those albums that people seemed to rave about and when I got it, I found it so dull and plodding. I didn't get the hype and it took a long time (and several more albums) for Alicia to really deliver.

However.....this is a great re-issue, real quality effort. I'd actually consider getting it.

Sales and SOTY Grammy wins determine classic status?

Sales and major Grammy wins do not determine classic status? Can a flop album with no critical/industry recognition be a classic? (not DIL, in general)

Yeah, B'Day and I Am are ridiculously better albums imo.

OK, but you basically just said Alicia's debut was more of a classic than another album  because of sales and a particular Grammy win. So obviously I'm not speaking on flops and non critically acclaimed albums. But you just made it clear that its not based on just those things, as critical acclaim and industry recognition are both determiners.

There are many albums that have not sold big numbers and won no Grammy but are considered classics, like Jay-Z's debut album Reasonable Doubt.

5 hot singles >> 1. And even some of the albums tracks ('Speechless', 'Gift From Virgo', 'Be With You') are better than anything Alicia's done.

Only a true stan would argue that Gift From Virgo is better than Alicia Keys' entire catalogue smiley: laugh.

I know, but vocally it is definitely more interesting than OffKeys sounding constipated and gasping for air trying to hit basic notes.

Holy monkey ya'll hate Alicia here. smiley: laugh

I really didn't know.

I don't even think Crazy in Love is better than You Don't Know My Name or If I Ain't Got You, much less her entire catalogue.

"YDKMN" got old for me and I always hated "If I Ain't Got You". "If I Ain't Got You" is what really started my dislike for her. "Diary" is probably the only Alicia song I could say I still like.

I like way more Alicia singles than Beyonka singles.

Alicia

A Woman's Worth
You Don't Know My Name
Diary
Like You'll Never See Me Again
Try Sleeping With a Broken Heart
Empire State of Mind
Unthinkable
Wait Til You See My Smile

Beyonce

Work it Out
Crazy In Love
Single Ladies
Sweet Dreams

I agree!!!!! I LOVE Dangerously In Love! Crazy In Love, Hip Hop Star, Be With You, Signs, That's How You Like It, Me Myself and I, The Closer I Get To You, even Baby Boy (which was so overplayed it made me hate it back in the day)...I love those songs.

On B'day, I only really love Upgrade U, Get Me Bodied, and Irreplacable (and even that one's a stretch). I think B'Day is her weakest and most annoying album. (I don't know if you can count Check On It...but it should have been on the original album, because its HOT).

I like I Am Sasha Fierce, but I don't love it. I absolutely HATE If I Were a Boy and Halo, although the latter was better than any ballads from B'Day. Sweet Dreams stole the show, though, and it's my favorite Beyonce song to date.

Oh, but whoever said Alicia Keys' You Don't Know My Name was weaker than whatever Beyonce songs...I BEG to differ. I hate Alicia Keys, but You Don't Know My Name is MY JAM!
