SO this thread is for both lovers and haters.
I've been reading so much bad comments on this board for the album lately, and I was just wondering what the real general opinion is right now in 2010.

I still love this album very much, especially when the weather is sunny outside this album always does it for me, I had it in my top 3 when it came out, and it's still ranking there.
The songs have this very positive quality, her vocals are pretty strong.
Sure it's not an album you'd want to check out for it's depth or whatever, but it's a feel good album with a lot catchy strong songs on it.

Next?

This thread should have been for TEOM

But whatever

I still like to listen to this album. It has some of my favorite songs and most of it still sounds fresh to me.
While I think it's a good commercial album, it's obviously not on par with its predecessor IMO.

True!

It's better

No honestly I like it more then TEOM.
If TEOM would have CC instead of SIO (sorry guys) SE instead of SS, didn't include TTF & included T4N, it would have been PURFFFECT.

I didn't like the way she decided to write the lyrics, to make them all "ghetto", it bothered me especially on ballads. And some of it sounded dated and cheaply produced by the time it leaked - Cruise Control, Last Kiss, Thanks For Nothin', I Stay In Love is just a piano loop.

On the other hand, the other songs are great. Touch My Body and I Wish You Well are Mariah classics, Side Effects would have been a brilliant single, as well as Migrate and For The Record.

So, for me, it's really mixed

I still love songs like IBLULT, For the Record, I Wish You Well, Thanx 4 Nothin', Migrate, I'm That Chick. But yeah, a lot of them sounded dated even by 2008 standards (ITC, I Stay In Love, Cruise Control, Bye Bye), and that became more apparent as the 'new album hype' died down. It's definitely (along with Rainbow) her album with the shortest shelf life.

I would have to say it's my least favorite album from the 2000s, but it's still decent.

It's a fun album. One of my favorite albums this decade. I prefer it to TEOM.

I really like "Migrate" "Touch My Body" "Love Story" "I'm That Chick" "I'll Be Lovin U Long Time" and I still listen to them a lot.
"For The Record" is just magical and captivating. I love it.

I have a very love/hate relationship with E.

I still think it's first and foremost a pop album, crafted for the sole purpose of making each song sound like a potential hit, without much depth. Now, I don't really have a problem with that, but I do when it's a tad misguided. As David said, a lot of the songs had an outdated sound by the time the album came out, and now, two years later, it sounds even more outdated. I still absolutely LOVE more than half the songs on the album, and think some of them are actually going to prove themselves to be quite timeless.

LOVE (aka, the songs that I think are some of her strongest mainstream material since the Sony days, even though most of them have little depth):
Touch My Body
I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time
I'm That Chick
Side Effects
For the Record
Love Story

Cruise Control
I Wish You Well

MIDDLE OF THE ROAD (aka never listen to them, but don't turn them off if I happen to catch them):
OOC
Thanks For Nothin' (I don't really understand why everyone is so GaGa over this song. It's aiight. The screechy vocals at the end are horrid, and that is what ruins it for me, not to mention JD's craptastic call-out in the beginning.
Last Kiss - I don't really have any strong feelings for it either way. It's neither here nor there, for me.

HATE (never want to listen to, always skip over them immediately):
Migrate - so completely outdated. If it had been released as the first single, she could've capitalized on the T-Pain craze, but after fall of 2008, it was old and sounded extremely outdated. One of the MOST overhyped, overrated tracks of Mariah's entire catalog.
Bye Bye
Fart Like a Whale

Actually, I think that both TEOM and Memoirs would have been infinitely stronger if the strongest tracks from E were dispersed to either album.

Good idea to re-visit this, Jasp. Interesting to see peoples views some time on.

To me, I'll always be dissapointed this album wasnt enjoyed more by the general public. Of all her albums, E=MC2 was her most diverse and seemed to have something for everyone. I do feel this could have been the Mariah that pretty much everyone could have gotten something from. That was perhaps a weakness of the album, it was too commercially designed so it lacked any real charm or consistency but it made up for with a lot of energy and variety.

Its no TEOM. There are no songs on there that match the heights of that album, the albums top heavy in quality (the second half wanders) and I really dont like her vocals on E - it sounds strained and held together by studio trickery on several parts. But its album that keeps you on your toes, jumping from raggae, synth beats, bouncy pop, WBT clones and dark subject matter pretty relentlessly. Its not a boring album by any means (unlike Memoirs). Its just pretty shallow and totally throwaway. The one night stand of Mariah albums I guess - fun for what it is and in that moment.

Its my second favourite album of the 2000's. It cant match TEOM for me but it beats out Memoirs simply for greater energy and variety.

I listen to this album less than any other. I was not a huge fan of either TEOM or E=MC^2, although TEOM has grown on me somewhat over the years. Both suffer from samey production, and slick superficial, silly songs. Migrate is a perfect example -- it sounds as if was churned out of a factory to appeal to every possible urban leaning radio trend. The lyrics are so silly, especially the chorus -- from the car, to the bar, to the party, to the after party, name drop this, name drop that -- it's your typical "I'm so rich it hurts" song.

I will say though -- there are a couple of good songs. "I Wish You Well" is gorgeous. I don't dig it's religious bend very much, but it's touching nevertheless. There is nothing else quite as good on the CD, "I Stay In Love" is probably the best of the catchier songs, but even it is too repetitive. "Side Effects" has interesting lyrics, but the production really drags and Young Jeezy adds very little.

This is the one Mariah CD that could disappear from her catalog and I wouldn't bat an eyelash. It's not even that it's that terrible; it's just utterly generic, bland, and faceless. It could have been recorded by Ciara. 'Charmbracelet' is an inferior album, but at least it has that Mariah Carey nature to it. The album has a 'fun' vibe that I did appreciate briefly, but the songs grow old fast and the album lacks cohesion. There's no song that touches my heart ('IWKW' is too bible-thumping, and the rest of the ballads just suck) or makes me want to dance ('Migrate' and 'ITC' are ruined by their slow pace, and in the former's case, a lack of a strong hook).

Contrary to popular belief, I don't think the album ever could have been that big- there are no major crossover hits on it a la 'WBT'. I do think they could have done a better job by releasing singles like 'IBLULT' and 'Migrate' after 'TMB' instead of 'Bye Bye', but that probably would have just given Mariah a couple digital hits.

Glad for this thread. There seems to be so much hate for E=MC2 that I have never understood.
I haven't listened to it that often lately, but I think I will more often with this warmer weather. It's very much a fun, festive album for a summer vibe.
My second favorite album this decade, after Memoirs.

I'm surprised you don't like it, it seems right up your alley. I think T4N is one of her best ballads from this century, it reminds me of Breakdown in its sincere melancholy and vocal stylings ("But I didn't wanna face the truth, that I was only being used", "Somebody say you know what I'm going through, you been left with nothin' too"). I think that her emotion is palpable on this track, unlike the robotic nature of songs like ISIL and Last Kiss. I also like the sort of mid-90s TLCesque sound of the production.

I think there are some clever lyrical moments too, such as

"Too much you can't count on one hand
Singing 3,4,5,6
7 days a week you're drowning in tears
He was so insincere
Now you're layin' up in bed
Every night singing
Hey boy, thanks for nothin'"

It's a solid effort. I don't like it as much as Memoirs or TEOM, but it's miles ahead of Emotions, Rainbow, Glitter, and Charmbraclet. Migrate, IBLULT, For The Record, and Last Kiss are the only songs that I still really love. Vocally, though, it's definitely not on par with TEOM or Memoirs.

I'm surprised that nobody is mentioned Touch My Body among their favorites! It's definitely one of the highlights of this album for me, simple because it's a bit different for Mariah, yet she makes it her own, and it's fun and fresh!
I think this album is full of gems that I appreciate very much, and definitely happy that we got them - from Side Effects, to Migrate, to For The Record, I'll Be Lovin U Long Time, and on. And even the ones that I like less, they each have something cool and interesting in them.

I think that's a bit harsh/exaggerated. Every album has songs that are worthy, and songs like IBLULT or T4N definitely have that Mariah Carey vibe.
