But how many people buy albums based on the cover design?

I would argue that most albums that flop tend to had sh!iteous album covers i.e. down right crap, can't read it, can't 'get it', way too artsy fartsy covers.

And I'll be honest....I bought Beyonce's DIL album not because of her hit songs, but because I thought 'wow', Beyonce's is well fit, in that sexy diamond outfit, I always wondered where her nips were.

How is it futuristic? She has a metal thing around her neck. Apart from that it's the same peroxide blonde hair and red lipstick that she's been rocking for god knows how long.

Kind of like Cher really. The album cover is the only thing I'd call futuristic.

I know... I mean, if the hair was a little curlier at the bottom it would be the exact same "vintage"/"Tranny Retro" image she had for her last album.

I actually kind of get the feeling she'd want to push it further but as some discussed, I think the label are trying to pull it back so she dosent become so out there that she's no longer a commercial product to the pop fanbase.

I don't see why image-wise she has to stay the same. She could just do what she did last time - dressed retro but most of the music was fairly modern with a few horns thrown in (which as you said she will probably do here musically)

Right.  Gaga's as freaky as can be image-wise but her music is obviously still pop/mainstream.  No reason Christina can't do the same.

Its her mentality that she has to air hump whatever genre is her new, 'true' identity. She has this terrible habit of faking her new fad so badly that comes across desperate and shallow. She should just do a Madonna - yeah, I like whats going on in this genre and I wanna ride it with an album. No more, no less. It dosent have to be an extreme spiritual makeover every album.

Christina has to make out every album that her music/image is now the real her and she's tapping into the real persona with this new found passion. It just makes her look ridiculous by the third or so album. I actually feel I know someone like Britney more than Christina since they arent trying so hard and seem more real as a result.

Yeah, pop open any tabloid and you'll see the real Britney staring right at you- greasy hair, mismatched clothing, and Frappuccino intact .  All I feel like I know about Christina is that she likes red lipstick.

Madonna was definitely a lot better with being honest about her image changes being, well, image changes.  She wasn't trying to convince anybody in 2008 that she was a hip hoppin' wrestler who clubbed it out with Timabaland and Pharrell every night.  Whereas Christina pretends each era is "the real her", which is why as you said she lacks identity- and is probably the reason (besides her bitchiness/time gaps between releases) she lacks a strong core fanbase.  Whether its Gaga, Mariah, or Madonna, fans (me) love someone with a strong and distinct personality.  Christina has zilch.

I should elaborate about that Britney comment - she dosent pretend every album is a new incarnation or whatever. She just rolls out the pop music and lets it be what it is. Its probably why she has a stable fanbase and brand. She's like Madonna like that. If they dabble in something urban, they dont try and pass off as anything deeper than what it is.
