why not? 200,000 is dismal at her stage in her career. This is only her 4th album, and she's still young. 200,000 would be followed by a week below 100,000 and she'd struggle to scan 500,000. This chick is clearly on the brink of extinction.

Precisely. She's not even 30 and she's hitting the kind of problems/sales that you'd expect a female in her middle ages would be facing. She's supposed to be this mega pop star. Scraping in at 200k is hardly something to be happy or secure with.

'WooHoo' is the 2nd single. It was sent for adds at Rhythmic radio and they are gonna set a date for Pop radio as well.
We know that but officially, NMT was a 'buzz single' (translation - the first single flopped). I've not heard the label officially regard Woohoo as single number two.

What kind of buzz single gets a performance on Oprah, an official radio release, a hyped premiere on her website and a video?

ANSWER - one that flopped

Buzz single? Buzz-Kill single more like

I really hope this album continues her trend of "sales halving every time"

Reviews really don't mean much for album sales.

Unless she pulls a P!nk (who debuted with 180k and has now sold over 1.7 million)

Good publicity does though. And Christina has been getting all but good publicity/hype.

Which TEOM had, not Memoirs. No one really talked about Memoirs negatively or positively, so that just further proves my point that reviews don't mean jack. Mariah debuted with 168k off the back of her name at that point and "Obsessed", reviews had nothing to do with it.

Not Myself Tonight may have flopped, but Christina has always had good opening weeks. Even her debut opened with 250k. I'm actually thinking she'll somehow make 200k now.

Agreed.  'Memoirs' had neither positive nor negative hype.  'Bionic' has negative hype.  We'll see which is worse next week LOL.

Reviews only ever seem to matter for movies, and even then there are exceptions.

^ Stripped had negative publicity and Dirrty flopped here, too. She still managed a 300k+ debut with that album, although the difference is Stripped came off of an album that sold 8 million.

Her Hits album makes a re-entry in the Billboard 200 charts this week.

And so I stand here and testify
To small and great alike
So the more you curse me
The more you're blessing me
The Word said it
Love your enemies

Do good to those who curse you
Pray for those who mistreat you

(Wish You Well / Mariah Carey)

i just listened to her album for the first time. for the majority of the album, i felt like i couldn't even tell that it was her singing. not that i want to hear all her grunting, but she has a pretty distinctive voice, and for the most part, it sounded like someone else was singing. the only cuts i liked were You Lost Me, and I Am.

~Scoop me up and we can go
To that little spot where no one knows~

I didn't say Memoirs was this hugely discussed album on the mouth of everyone and their moms, but 'Obsessed' had the whole Eminem controversy with it and had IDJ kept the original 25/8 release date for the album, it would have benefited from that talk IMO.
Me talking about reviews was just to point how differently the albums are received.

And I think word of mouth does something (not huge amounts) to album sales. If you listen to the leak or you are someone who reads reviews and you tell all of your friends that the album sucks, they are most likely not going to buy it IMO...

See I don't think that it would have. Obsessed didn't.

that usually helps new artists, imo (see Snorah Jones, Amy Crackhouse or Susan Boring).

So you don't think that the video made the tabloids because Mariah dressed up as Eminem in it? Or that the whole feud thing didn't spark curiosity/interest when DJs introduced it at radio as Mariah's response to Eminem's diss track?

I could care less about tabloids or DJ's talking *@@#, honestly. If it doesn't help album or single sales (which it didn't - there's actual proof the remix helped sales), I could care less about any of that crap.

I see your point, yet it is Mariah's best selling digital single (excluding 'AIWFCIY').
And you're right about the remix, I remember it.
