She started to make a lot of odd decisions around CB that more or less indicated discomfort with the voice she actually had.

Like people have said, sometimes she sounded bad, but she totally embraced the lower part of her voice and sang in those more husky tones. She sang through Hero, even on a bad day in the RB, but by 2003 she was lipping to album vocals. Somewhere along the line she lost all confidence in her vocals or wanted them to be something unrealistic, where in BF through RB in particular, her attitude was very much 'come as you are'.

She did seem suddenly very uncomfortable with her voice. The confidence seemed to evaporate overnight for me after the breakdown and the whole CB promo campaign. I'm sure she realised her voice wasn't quite great around Rainbow but as you say, she was still out there generally live and glowingly showing off her voice. By 2002, she'd almost withdrawn behind a façade of backing tracks or flat out album recordings.

Its funny to me because I still love her Rainbow performances even if they aren't amazing. But its that fun and comfortable confidence she had on stage during that era that elevates it all. I hate seeing Mariah on stage looking nervous and not wanting to be there, which is what I remember a lot of CB promo being about. She just seemed so, so edgy that she was going to get caught miming or unhappy her voice couldn't do what she wanted it to.
