Yeah, her voice was all over the place during that period. Those early Glitter performances were really shaky, then she got great... then she sounded awful on CB and amazing on tour.
Something was seriously up for her around that time, for sure. I have no idea what it was but for most of the CB era (tour excluded), her voice seemed to fall apart and for the first time it was very, very obvious. I wondered if it was maybe the aftereffects of whatever medication she needed from 2001? Of course by now I've adjusted and accepted this aspect of Mariah but then, to see her so suddenly in such ill voice was so jarring,
I don't know about that, I mean I noticed in the RB era that she sounded pretty awful at times (and she started lipping way more). Then she sounded great for the Glitter sessions. Then terrible for the first few Glitter performances, then great again. It was kind of up and down from RB on. (Her voice had obviously changed especially from #1's on, but she still managed to sound really strong, with minimal lipping then).
But yeah overall I would say CB and E were the two worst vocal eras for sure.
Oh yeah. The voice was going a bit wonky even around Rainbow. You had a little more thinness to her voice, a few songs were being rearranged to avoid tougher parts, the lipping coming out, etc I guess though the confidence was still there which helped and she still seemed very comfortable to show off her voice. She'd strut out onto the MTV Awards in Ireland looking like she was in her element. Her voice certainly improved in terms of album vocals on Glitter, its a sensational delivery but still took a massive drop when it came to performing those songs live/post-breakdown.
The decline started before Glitter/CB but those two eras was when it suddenly became very clear and the real drop came for me.
