^ LMAO, even Rihanna made the list twice!
The gap between Adele and the rest of the list is also insane. Congrats to Gaga on having the #2 album of the year with her "flop."
You can't be that naive. You've GOT to realise that 5.4 million WW for the supposedly biggest star ATM, is pretty lame.
1. Who said she was the world's biggest star?2. Since when does massive fame translate to record sales?
3. The fact is she still had the second biggest album of the year despite the 'backlash' so everyone can suck it.
She obviously is the biggest star of the last couple of years. Questions #2: since The Fame sold 16 million worldwide.
Not to keep arguing, but the notion of a 'star' is an interesting one. Gaga is certainly the most ubiquitous music act of the last few years, but does that translate to 'star power' the way most think of it? How do her magazines sell, for example, compared to other A-list covers? She's certainly not a tabloid star, which I think is a good thing, but does that translate to the general public being invested in her?
My other point was that often when people have huge 'star power', it doesn't mean their music necessarily sells. It's often to the contrary- Adele was basically a nobody when '21' took off.
As Carlos said, The Fame's sales (let's also not forget that she had a re-release which was basically a separate project) were basically a fluke and it's kinda nuts to expect her to keep matching that standard. I won't be screaming FLOP if Adele's next record only does 5-7 mill WW. BTW is ultimately an example of what happens when an artist has so much initial success that the label allows them to be as over-the-top and self-indulgent as they want on the next album. I feel that there will be a bit of a re-direction on her next proper release.
While I don't quite agree with your logic on Gaga's star power, I do think we're at that point where her third album will really settle the issues we've been discussing on Gaga for much of this year. There are only two possibilities for me -
1) Born This Way was something of a mis-step and with a better re-direction she will be back to selling The Fame/Fame Monster style numbers as a standard. This frankly isn't going to be the case but there you go. The way some people talk they really do believe she can do 13 million plus like its an everyday thing in the industry and not a 21 style fluke.
2) Born This Way is her settling into her realistic sales amount that will define her career while she is still successful. In an industry where albums generally do no more than 7 million, this will be her peak. So with BTW coming in at over 5, this project too would be considered a successful venture (which is what I class it as).
