^I don't know I think releasing 'TR' or 'Breakdown' after something like 'Butterfly' would have just been too much change from Mariah's "formula". Butterfly probably wouldn't have done that well, and then to go for something so left field would just be too much change. Neither song would have performed well in the charts and the album would be labelled a bomb. Coming off 'Daydream' that would have been catatrophic with her career.

It was more important than ever for Mariah to have successful singles to prove that she could do it without Tommy's 'guidance' - I get why they went with the safe choices. I think going with the more RnB cuts on the album would have been too much change for people and might have worked against her.

Then she'd have looked really silly going into 'Rainbow', which was full of "single friendly" material.

A bit like Kelly Clarkson doing 'My December' then backtracking with 'All I Ever Wanted'

I hear you, but I still think it's pretty lame to release your most intriguing album yet and basically release singles that could've been on your last album. Madonna released Frozen as the lead single which was a risky choice but one that ended up paying off big time. It would've been nice to see that kind of risk-taking from Mariah/Sony for a change.
