Entertainment Weekly: Aguilera's performance reminiscent of Whitney in her prime!

I don't know whether to laugh or cry. EW has officially lost it.

Yeah, it was a good performance but comparing it to Whitney at her best is ludicrous. Whitney was so good when she was on top of her game that vocally I dont even think Mariah could match her.
Whitney didnt come close to Mariah in her prime.

Whitney tends to get more praise as the 'voice of our generation' over Mariah by critics, regardless of what you say or think.

That may be true, but Mariah has been widely cited as the major influence for the typical American Idol female performer, as well as often being mentioned by reviewers as a template for singers like Christina, Leona Lewis, Jessica Simpson, etc. Whitney may get more praise, but Mariah's influence on the new generation of female singers is greater.

Of course and I wasn't disputing that. Creatively, Mariah has been far more pioneering and influential since a lot of the acts you've mentioned werent looking to sing Whitney MOR ballads (that genre was dying a death by the time the likes of Christina and Jessica rolled around) bur rather follow the trends of Urban Pop that Mariah had made so popular.

But I hear a lot more critics cite Whitney as the more acclaimed singer, likely because her material isnt diverse or all that inspired and is all about the belting, the BIG voice upfront that is much more in your face. Most of her catalogue is just big ballads that let her show off her voice. Mariah can do more and not just with her voice but the lyrics or production of the songs.

Not every Mariah song has been about her belting the living sh!t out of a song. Pretty much all of Whitneys are.
