Apart from the generic lyrics, I like Music Box as well. That isn't to say it's my favorite or that I don't like what she does now, but I definitely don't see MB as some crap project or anything. And regardless of whether or not she felt the songs, I feel her vocals on it. Maybe her not wanting to do the songs worked, because she sounds so lonely to me on that CD. Her vocal on songs like "Just To Hold You Once Again" really reveal the personal turmoil she had, even if the lyrics aren't so descriptive.

Exactly! The vocals are really moving and emotional, if indeed not for her, then for very many listeneres around the world and there are many songs off of this album, including B-sides which are still dearly loved and remembered while in comparison there've been quite a few posts here claiming that TEOM soon became forgettable( which I don't completely support). It's become a trend and cool to hate on this album like there's no tomorrow which is too much, really! So many fans and reviews have said that she could sing the phone book with THAT voice and it'd still be amazing!
And Mariah proclaimed how she loved BINY,for example, and she was the one who insisted on releasing it, so she must have sung it with a real, authentic desire-unlike the MB album, but somehow MB turned out to be the product of an incomparably greater quality.
She's done incredible things after it but MB has earned its place in her discography and I'm sure she herself wouldn't get rid of the love and sales it brought her!Whether she really put her self into it or not ,her voice could reach and impact emotionally almost everyone not just in the USA but from around the world. That alone deserves respect!
And as for the ballads , My own favourites are not from MB, but from the debut album and Emotions, and they were not exactly A/C-just gorgeous in every way.
