It funny to think The Dream was the producer of her last two big hits. I don't think she will ever do a major amount of work with him again, if any work at all but I would like to see what they would come up with on one other song.

But the Dream did have the advantage of riding off the MASSIVE success of TEOM. Even if TMB wasn't great, it might have still hit #1 (SIO) just because it's Mariah. Obsessed was a hit and reached the top 10. However, for Mariah's standards, it was slightly disappointing that it "only" peaked at #7.

^It's not realistic to have the same standard for Mariah at 29 and Mariah at 39 though. Obsessed did great following the 'E' flop singles and for someone who'd been in the business for 19 years.

Wait, who said anything about Mariah at 29 and her Rainbow days? TEOM and Memoirs were only 3 years apart.. But you're right, after all those flop singles from E, Obsessed did pretty good (including for Mariah's standards) and most could only dream of hitting #7. But with TMB, I do think Dream definitely had the advantage of TEOM being such a big success and Mariah herself being still very popular. Her name alone would sell.

^ I don't agree. If that were the case, where were the other hit singles from E=MC2?  TMB was clearly and catchy, GREAT single. Nothing else on the album (except for Migrate) even created any buzz at all.

^ RIGHT! Y'all need to accept the fact that TMB was/is an undeniable stone groove smash hit wonder, and deal.

Absolutely. That song really showed can score a hit against all the odds.

There was huge hype around Mariah before TMB dropped because of TEOM but TMB is a great pop song and it was a great single at that time. It's one of the best songs on the album.

Obsessed had a lot of hype around it because of the Eminem drama but after all the flops on E=MC2, Obsessed could have easily tanked so it was a great single and perfect for her career at the moment.

So The Dream might not be everyone's favorite person after Memoirs but he does deserve credit for being involved in her last two big hits.

That's weird, cause I thought it was pretty much given that TEOM helped with the success of TMB. I'm not talking about the other singles or O right now you guys had some good points. But I think it certainly isn't as hard to have a hit right after massively succesful TEOM than it is to have a hit after Glitter/CB. Know what I mean?

Mariah had successful era after successful era in the 90's but I have never really heard people say the success of songs like Honey or Fantasy being based on the success of the previous era.

Undoubtedly there was massive hype and interest in what Mariah was going to do next after TEOM but I don't think the success of TMB was solely based on the success of TEOM. I understand what you are saying though. Of course it is a lot easier to have a hit after a successful era but quality music has to play a part too. Say Something didn't do much when it was released so she didn't have the golden touch either.

True and I don't think it's solely because of TEOM. I think it definitely helped with the success. Mariah's was THE artist of the 90s. I don't think you can really compare her 90s days to this. Everything was different back then.

Right, it wouldn't have flew up the airplay charts like that without it.

The 90s were different than the way things are now, though. Really, Mariah was one of the first artists who went after big hype for the lead single of an album. "Fantasy" was big for a lot of reasons, one of which was surely her popularity coming off MB and the holiday CD. But it was a killer single, and there was a lot of promotion behind the release of the single and video. They went for a #1 debut and got it. But that didn't happen until the mid-90s. Now artists go for big debuts all of the time, and riding the success of a previous release helps all artists.

"TMB" would not have been as successful as it was had it followed Charmbracelet.

This.

As much as I LOVE TMB, I still secretly wish that IBLULT was released first... ::pressed::

Indeed. There wasn't overflowing chemistry between them anyway. For every H.A.T.E U, you got a dozen other mediocre tracks that were the definition of forgetable. I don't think her doing one or two tracks would be a disaster though. You never know, you may get one little gem that could make it onto the album.

I kinda disagree. Mariah's 2 best songs post Butterfly are Dream songs, namely Betcha and Hate u. They've done about 12-13 songs together, 2 of which are amazing, 1 more that is pretty good (Candy Bling) and 3 more that are at least descent (TMB, Imperfect and O). Not really that bad. Half of their songs together worked. I hope she works with him again

Betcha Gon Know is pretty much what I though a callbo with R.Kelly and Mariah would sound like.
