Slant is counting down their top 100 singles of the 90s all week. They are doing 20 a day and have thus posted 61-100. "Fantasy" comes in at #61:

61. Mariah Carey, "Fantasy." Mariah's "Fantasy" remains one of the finest examples of reworking an extensive sample into a fully realized pop masterpiece. The funky, warbling strains of Tom Tom Club's "Genius of Love" come ringing through immediately, and there's no great effort to disguise any of the borrowed elements. And though the stripped-down remix, which brilliantly entwines the bridge portions with O.D.B's absurd rap ("Japan, are you in the house?"), is considered by some to be the definitive version, the original is escapism perfected, a summer bubblegum gem with a sweet, flawless vocal line driven by a diva in her prime. KL
I like how the writer notes the reworking of the sampling and how he calls the original version "escapism perfected."

I could see "Breakdown" or something making this list as well as Slant has touted it and some others before.

It'll be interesting to see if anything else comes up, I'm guessing Honey perhaps.

I would've ranked Fantasy WAAAAAY higher than 61. Still it's good to see it's been included and the writer does a brilliant job describing the song and its remix in little more than 5 lines.

If any of the Butterfly singles has a chance to show up that's 'Breakdown' IMO.
'Honey' (although remembered for the "schock value" of the video), 'Butterfly' and 'My All' never got that praise as individual songs. And none of them are among Mariah's classics as per the general public or in terms of recurrent airplay.
The video for 'The Roof' got some acclaim, but the song itself is rarely cited/remembered. 'Breakdown' therefore has the best shot and it was actually mentioned in reviews of the album in general as a standout track along with, sometimes, 'Close My Eyes'.

I wouldn't be surprised to see 'Always Be My Baby' or 'Vision Of Love' on the list, tbh.

^ Yeah VOL will probably be on there.

I agree too - Fantasy should be much higher. It's my favorite single of hers overall I'd say.

I'm glad it made the list but Fantasy should really be in the Top 10. The song still gets played today and sounds fresh when u hear it. I mean that Remix really chaged the music biz and it deserves to be remembered. For alot of people it was moment like wait this is Mariah with Rapper Why do I Like This? Oh That's Right It's Mariah and It's Amazing.....lol

^ I have to say, I actually find the remix to be quite overrated. It has some historical significance, so I can see why it might be included in something like this, but I think there are better remixes of Fantasy and she's done way better rap collabos. I've never been a fan of ODB though, as he was basically the comedy-relief guy in Wu Tang Clan.

Yeah it is so far -- looks like they still have the Top 20 left though. I wonder what is going to be #1? That picture makes me think Madonna is going to top out at number one with either Vogue or Justify My Love, since they have that photograph from Erotica on the main page.

I'm sure Dr. Dre will have an entry or two as well -- surely Let Me Ride/Nuthin' But A G Thang are going to make a top-20 entry, or perhaps California Love with Tupac.

If Fantasy, one of her most recognizable and enduring hits, is that low then she won't have any other entries. I haven't looked at the list but let me guess, Madonna is on there more than once? Slant has always been obsessed with her.

Slant is very diva-friendly in general (Sal-Madonna stan, Eric H -Janet stan and we used to have Rich for Mimi)
And there were so many great singles released in the 90's. Having one song on the list is already pretty good. I'm glad they went with Fantasy. Aside from VOL, I can't think of any other Mariah single that should have made the list.
Yeah "Secret" being on there is ridiculous lol.

^ I'd argue that ABMB is more remembered than VOL. It gets more recurrent airplay, it's one of her most played old songs in fact, and it's her only song currently in the iTunes Top 1000. Fantasy, VOL and ABMB should all have been on the list, and probably AIWFCIY too seeing as it's the only Christmas classic of the last 20+ years. It's obviously a sign of bias that Madonna has three songs on the list when she was pretty much a hasbeen for most of the 90s, and Mariah ruled that decade.

She also arguably made her best music in the 90s, and isn't the list based on their opinion, not charts/sales? It would be nice if Mariah was included more but I don't see how anyone can be surprised- she's often ignored on these critics' countdowns.

Yeah but come on, Secret?? That's really pushing it. And over songs like VOL, ABMB, AIWFCIY? I don't think so.
